I am feeling so sorry for my sweet itch suffering mare, is it my imagination or do the midges seem really bad this year? Even I am being really attacked by them this year. My arms are covered in bites, look really unsightly and itch like hell. Thinking if it carries on I am going to have to go on the sweet itch trial

. Seriuosly what is everyone doing to prevent their horses and themselves from being eaten alive?
 
sorry to hijack your post put I have the same problem! the horse i ride hasnt got sweet itch but hes getting eaten alive from the midges this year - and so am i! it would be good to hear about what people do to get rid of the midges xxx

They are horrible - I have had to use a lot more skin so soft in my fly spray for Chancer to stop him getting itchy - his tail is very oily as is his belly, but he seems better for it.
 
I just do not undersatnd it? Any ideas on products to use? At this rate I reckon the horse will be living in a bit more
 
I use lots ok skin so soft and also brewers yeast in his feed. I have also had to invest in a beott type rug, he's had it on a week now and is soo much happier.

not sure if its because I've started giving him marmite, stopped the garlic, or just the weather. But its working

My boy gets sweet itch bad hes on the sweet itch trial but you have to start it at the beginning of the year so im afraid its abit late now

Or i read this in a magazint eh other day, havent tried it yet but i might give it a try if i need to.

Add 2 tablespoons of kerosene (BBQ lighter fuel) to a gallon bucket of warm water.

Mix thouroughly using a sponge, squeezing and expressing, for at least five minutes.

Transfere solution into storage bottles, (label clearly)
To apply osak sponge in solution, squeeze out so its damp, not soaking.

Wipe sponge all over body concentratingon areas most prone to bites, resoaking sponge if one application not sufficient to cover area.

As ive said i havent tried it but its a pretty cheap way if it works.

Jim wants in by 3pm to get away from them but they even get in his stable. Even with his sweetitch rug & fly repellant he's still getting bitten, the other day his sheath was swollen from bites & he was so itchy I ended up giving him a wash since that always seems to help him.

I hope they aren't going to be this bad all summer!
