Hello all
So on the way home last night I was working out that i would reach the yard where im going to keep my new horse (not got it yet) at about 1730 Monday to Friday.
Last night the sky was still slightly light but give it a week and its gona be dark at 1730 ... So my question is to all those who have to work and do the horse at the end of the day...

What riding do you do in the week?

I will have access to a small outdoor floodlit school so im looking for ideas for say 2-3 times a week of riding (possibly lunging/ long-reining!!) to break up the 'schooling'

Weekends will be for lovely hacking of course so just looking for some ideas and opinions on what you do please? :)

Mornings are pretty much out of the question as i leave for work at 0650 each morning so if im doing the yard early shift visit (will share with a friend) it will be just a case of throwing them some food and turfing them out for the day trying not to get my suit muddy in the process :o

Thanks in advance :D

Hows about getting together with a few other liveries and doing a drill ride? You can all make one up and learn each others over winter :)

I used to school for one, jump the next and school or lunge the third depending on arena space. Now I'm lucky enough to work at the yard and use my.mare as a hack escort. A lot of our liveries get us or a sharer to hack once in the week in daylight.

Schooling in the dark isn't a problem if you have flood lights - it isn't much different from schooling in daylight.

The shadows thrown by the lights can cause the horse to spook so take it gently to begin with so ned knonws there is nothing nasty in the corners or behind a jump. But other than that it is really just the same. Do just the same as you would do in the light!

As it is a new horse why not do a groundwork session a week and make a little obstacle course walking over tarp, round cones, backing up through a labrinth of poles? It will also help build your relationship with your horse whilst having fun together :)
