I can hear thunder but it's not reached us yet.
If the storm hits round here, would Roo be safer in the field where she can run round if she's scared, or would she be best in the stable?
I'm guessing she should go in her stable, but not sure if this would prove worse, if she's scared and cooped up?

i have always left mine out in a storms provided it's not forcats to be really bad.

It's normal at this time of year to have small summer storms. I would leave out.

If however it was predictided for a gale force wind heavy rain and thunder and lightening then I would bring in

Yeah thats a good point, I would never forgive myself if that happened!
We've not had a thunder storm in the time I've had her, but she's fairly bombproof so with any luck she won't be scared of it.

did you know you don't even need to have a storm to be struck by lightening...it can happen at any time.

don't molly coddle so much... if you hear that there is a big storm on the way then yes do stable..

but not for the odd light summer storm....there are many horse owners who have horses that live out all year round..

do you think they are worried...no..
 
I think it's a judgement call, its about knowing how your horse would react, but if you dont know how she will cope i think the stable is probs best just as there is less chance of things going wrong, ive known horses run through fences in storms.. never heard of a horse being struck by lightning though!!
 
I would leave her out, its summer and there will be no end of rumbles and thunder storms, you could be rushing down ever night putting her in otherwise. Horses are not daft, if there are never exposed to the elements they will never understand and they usually cope well, its something they have grown up and got used to as foals.

If she's usually quite laid back then I'm sure she will be fine, specially if she's out with others that are ok, it might be wise to observe her first time to make sure, if its a really bad storm that went on for a while then no I don't think you would be over re-acting and yes I'd bring in, but over a bit of a rumble and few flashes.

if you have a storm nervous horse i would say = stable,
try using a loud portable radio to drown out the storm,
to be honest i think a lot of the time they are spooked because the owner is wound up, not always but some are, you act calm, give a good example, no shouting and getting bothered then ok?
1 horse i had used to stick her head under my coat and hide.
 
Out. They feel safer when free to move about. Do not think for a minute they will feel safe and cosy away from the strom inside their stable. They are flight animals and likely to feel trapped an will be able to hear the noises but not know what they are. I'd also say more risk of barn/ stable block being struck by lightning and being set alight than and individual horse out in the field! Fire would scare me more. Also worry in high winds if a roof panel came of stabled horse would totally freak.

End of the day though you can't protect from everythiung and either has its inherent risks, you just have to make the best judgement call you can based on the info you have at the time.
 
A few years ago I went belting down to the yard in the middle of an horrendous thunder storm to bring my precious boy in....OH went mental with me because it really was not safe to be out driving. When I arrived at the yard...all the horse were happily grazing, no bother....so I left them at it.
 
yeah, I would be worried about the stables being struck, but I think both stables and horses being struck are freak accidents, they can't happen that often surely?
I will leave her out unless it gets really bad, especially seenas one of the other horses is impossible to catch and sticks to Roo like glue, I think she'd end up hurting herself if I took Roo away in bad weather.

It will happen at sometime somewhere but when it does it is a freak accident. Things can still happen in the stable, injury especially if they are stressed in a big storm. I wouldnt worry about a summer storm.

We are the york side of malton, weve just had the most almighty downpour that lasted about 20mins, the storm was right on top of us.. pretty much blue sky now though! horses are soggy but fine, didnt really seem to notice the thunder and lightning!

Where are you? did the storm hit you?
 
We are North of York and I had the vet here trying to examine my arab mare's mouth and do the passport markings for our very complicated coloured filly(!) when the storm was raging.
I am soaked to the skin but personally I think the horses that were out were not so afraid as the ones that were in.
 
Ours were always far far happier outside during storms, they would be grazing away, but any in the stables would get frightened when the storm closed in. Logically, your stables are far more likely to get hit by lightning than a horse in a field (bigger surface area, metal etc).
 
I'm near Castleford in Leeds.
I could hear thunder but it stayed nice, I got to the yard and Hazel started talking about the storm, the yard is literally 5 minutes drive away and the storm went there but not here. That must be the thunder I could hear lol.
By the time I got to yard it was nice so I rode

Field. far safer than being inside where the risk of the building being hit is far greater than a moving object in a field.
