Isn’t it funny how vastly different horses can be? You could not find two more different personalities than Milagra and Mimosa.

Mimosa cannot do anything at a walk, everything is done at a trot or canter and everything must be done right now. If Mimosa wants water, she thunders up to the trough. When she sees our Landy arrive, we are met with a spectacular gallop and if we take too long getting out the car, she paces at the gate and yells her head off. Thank goodness we have no neighbors!

Milagra waits her turn and is never pushy. She ignores all of Mim’s antics, and she is so law-abiding that even when the wind has taken the electric fence down, she will stay on the side that I’ve put her in whereas Mim is out like a shot.

I took this yesterday and it just captures them so perfectly.

Mimosa loves seeing the vet or dentist and everyone gets groomed and nickered to. Milagra is good as gold but you can see she’d prefer to be left to her own devices. She had the dentist this week and stood like a rock but with big mournful eyes. Mimosa, of course, objected thoroughly to the Companion Horse receiving attention and the Main Horse being made to wait, so stood about 12 feet away from us, bellowing until the dentist eventually had to go over and give her a carrot to convince her she wasn’t being ignored.

I posted a while ago about changing trimmer and really finding the experience so interesting. Their new trimmer came for her second visit and says she already sees a difference in their feet. Interestingly she also said she saw a difference in Milagra from a condition and attitude perspective - she engaged more and was almost affectionate. So it’s nice to know that it’s not just me thinking she’s coming out of her shell a bit.

If anyone has any comments about feet, here is a comparison between Mim and Milagra’s fronts.

Any comments welcome. I should have got side photos too - will get some tomorrow.

My lovely husband has been helping me walk them out a lot, and going for a walk or jog when I ride Mim so I still have a pair of eyes on me. Mim has been brilliant and hasn’t put a foot wrong, and I am so enjoying riding her.

I have been lunging Milagra and doing some pole work with her. She’s relaxing a lot more now - previously she’s been quite tense to work and tends to be almost over-collected. We are starting to see a bit more long and low now and less tension.

I gave the girls the rest of the field to mow down this weekend and they have been munching away happily. They now have the run of the full track system which is short grass on track down to the shelter and on the flat-ish top section, thistles and nettles on the slopes and then long grass, thistles and nettles in the basin area and the section in the photo.

And then, finally, Mimosa met her reflection again this weekend while we were working on the fencing. She was absolutely fascinated ?

Milagra sounds very like the retired brood mare living with me. She is the most polite horse I have ever met and so laid back. I just can't imagine her ever biting or kicking. Quite aloof unless she decides she needs a fuss which isn't very often. She is half quarter horse so may be the temperament comes from there. She is perfect for someone like me who really can't cope with temperamental horses any more.

She’s exactly that. I’m hoping that if I can get her to a point where her back muscles up a bit, I can find a lightweight rider who would like to hack and do some low level schooling. She’s so genuine and sweet, she could be lovely for someone who just wanted to focus on the riding, without any drama.

Are you still contemplatively horse shopping for LordG, LadyG? There's a 16hh 10 year old half percheron on a Facebook group I'm on. Goes Western or English. Nice looking. I can't seem to link the ad though.

Yes, we still have a cart-horse shaped hole in the herd. We have taken a step back, thinking winter might bring prices down a bit as they were utterly exorbitant during lockdown. But a percheron is a good call as I believe they are quite arab-y in their heads, which would suit me better than some others. I’ve done a quick search on FB but can’t see anything. Would you mind pm-ing me the group name?
