mild arthritic changes in ths stifle

what tests has the vet done and what were the actual findings? I ask because my 5 year old was xrayed and they showed changes and OCD, however on operating through arthroscopy they found quite a bit of damage to the actual cartilage and ligaments which did not show up on xray or ultrasound. He was only 1/10th lame and it was a huge shock to see the damage. This now has a severe impact on whether he will be able to resume ridden work in the future and at best he will be able to do low level dressage, showing and hacking. No eventing or major fast work.

what is the cause? could have an impact. during an op to remove a bone chip in stifle, (injury related) mild arthritic changes were noted - horse has had cortisone injection in stifle and is on vet's glucosamine and is forecast to be back in full work. hope that helps.
