My old girl has been seen by the vet, and he believes she is suffering from a mild bout of colitis. As part of her treatment/ongoing management, he has recommended a product called bio sponge, which i can purchase from the practice, or he did say Boots used to sell a product called ico gel that was basically the same (and presumably, a lot cheaper without the equine label). I have been searching the internet this evening for these products, and i'm struggling to find bio sponge available in the uk, and iso gel on the Boots website. I have been finding products coming up under the iso gel name, but they seem to be high carbohydrate isotonic recovery products for athletes, which doesn't sound right to me. Typically this happens at the start of the weekend, and as it's not an emergency, so i don't want to bother my vet about it until Monday, but I also want to get on and source what my girl needs as soon as possible. I was just wondering if anybody on here could help me source either product.
Thank you in advance.

Interested to learn that horses can get colitis, I’ve never heard this before.... is the treatment proposed to stop your horse from being loose? Or are there additional symptoms such as bleeding or mucus?

I didn't know they could get it either, or really know anything about it. In my horses case, the vet explained it as the inflammation in the hind gut is causing liquid to leak back into the gut, so she has normally formed droppings, but passing a watery liquid with it. The treatment should help with preventing that liquid leaking back in. There is no signs of mucus or bleeding yet, and having scared the life out of myself with the death sentence stories of colitis in horses on good 'ole google, my vet seems very relaxed and positive about it.

That’s really interesting, thanks for the info! All the best to you and your horse.

That particular type of clay is only sold as bio sponge as far as I know. I did use bentonite clay a while back which is a slightly more general name for a naturally occurring clay made up predominantly of smectites (i assume they make the bio sponge by just refining this bentonite clay). It's well known for its use for colitis, and it seemed to do the trick for my horse.

Hi my boy needed bio sponge last year and I did source some from the states as he needed a long course, however while I was waiting for it to arrive I contacted Liphook Equine Hispital and they had some in stock which they dispensed (after a chat to my vet) until mine arrived, it’s amazing stuff
