ok, hi!
i've just had an ex livery on the phone in a panic - her mare has changed shape and is producing milk..........!
the story so far is, she only bought the mare 3 weeks ago! Bought from a lady who does run a stud (so stallions around). She was stabled with us for 3weeks but moved yards on saturday to be closer to home as it was taking her over an hour to get to us. So she has changed surroundings quite a bit in recent weeks, she was out in the day until she moved at weekend and is now in 24/7.
The vet came last friday to do her jabs and did comment about her shape, and said she has a big ribcage. (mare looks quite poor as if she needs building up, vet thought its just the way the mare is and it wont improve)
Soooooooooo
what do we all think? Is it likely a mare would have a phamton this time of year and produce milk?? could she be expecting?
The girl says she is going to call the vet in the morning but at the moment is in sheer panic. The saddler came out today and apparently the mare has turned into a grumpy cow.

i've advised her to get her new YO to do a late night check if poss and also that IF she thinks that she is going to have a baby overnight - not to put all of the rugs on her!

has she dropped off?

I think id be giving the vet a bit of a call, for reassurence if nowt else as it is possible she has has contact with a stallion,

Id do a late night check and id also try and feel if shes dropped off..

If shes producing milk. it doesnt mean the baby is coming now.. (BTW ALL this is off cattle really)

Loux

i went through all of the things with her on the phone that i had to look at with my mare and she seemed to say 'yep' to all of them (shape changes etc)
my lovely mare ran milk for weeks before she gave birth - those sleepless nights!
i've said i will go and see them tomorrow afternoon assuming i survive having my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow morning!
do you think she should get an emergency call out or wait until tomorrow ??
(ok - just realised how stupid that question is - as after all, she has only just noticed milk, and is probably just panicing and i guess its very unlikely she would foal tonight - or is it? - jeez, why do people think you are an expert after breeding one foal!)

We sold an empty mare to a girl who wanted to break her in after many years as a broodmare, and she suddenly ran milk for weeks on end, vet said it was a hormone imbalance as no way had she been covered.

Can't remember what time of year she did this though, we sold her at weaning in the autumn.

But she needs to be sure, and mares that, for example, are carrying undetected twins, and going to abort also sometimes run milk.
