Once the milk has changed and pH is lower than 6.2 and calcium is somewhere between 500 and 1000, what is the longest your mares have stayed like that before foaling.

I have a maiden mare with those readings tonight, but she is only 321 days today! Not too much of a bag to speak of and not much else to suggest she will foal soon.

Thoughts please :D

72 hours is the longest I've ever had after the ph bottoms out and the calcium is around 800 ... and that was with a maiden. Almost all of the others have been within 24 hours with the noticable exception of 2 mares who hung on for 36 hours.

Thanks Spring Feather.

We tested her on Saturday and the milk wasn't ready. The test last night was lower than 6.2 pH and calcium between 500 and 1000, then at 2:20am this morning she produced an exquisite buckskin filly at 322 days gestation :D

I am sooooooo pleased you introduced me to milk testing as she was showing no other signs really. She had a small bag, had normal tail strength, muscles still quite tight in her quarters and her lady bits had not elongated very much at all. If it wasn't for the milk test, I would have sworn she would not have foaled this morning.

The FB photos are stunning, he is really stamping his babies!

When do you start milk testing. Willough is 314 days and has a bit of a bag, teats are tiny and turned inwards still (she is maiden and would be a AA cup if human, when not in foal) Bag is fairly warm and hard in the mornings, goes down a bit after she's been out. She is just starting to slacken off, well as much as a fat ar5ed cobby bottom will!

I was thinking I'd leave it a while, but you post is making me feel otherwise!

Think that the above comment has just confirmed to me that i should get some test strips :)
tootles off to find the post about which strips are best....

I had a mare this year who went a good three days on those readings. In fact I went and bought more strips as I thought they weren't working, I got the same reading with the new ones and so I then tested the PH with Gaviscon to make sure they were alright. She was not a maiden. Have to say it is the first time this has happened as it is usually within 24 hours.

link works for me, just scroll down the page a little.
Thistle, I couldn't start testing until I could get milk, which was quite a few days after she waxed up a little, she was v v difficult to milk though, very short wide teats i couldn't get a hold of, until she really let the milk down.
the testing definitely works and i now wish i'd had more faith in it, but i was too busy fretting about missing the birth.
cruiseline, your filly is gorgeous, congrats.

I had a little squeeze this morning and easily got thick clear yellow liquid, the joys of having a mare that doesn't mind. I'll try and test some tonight to get a base line to work from. She had better cross her legs for a while though.

Cruiseline your mare obviously knew that rain + sunshine = grass!
