Milk Thistle .. Ground or whole Seeds ?

Feeding as a nutritional support/ antioxidant ... Currently using Thunderbrooks ground seed but wondered why some feed whole seed as opposed to the ground/ powdered milk thistle ?
 
I use Equimins on recommendation from The Osteo Vet (Tom). Its quite economical as well I think. Might be price that people feed the above?
 
Freshly ground. I usually ground a weeks' worth at a time. The outsides/shells of the seeds are too thick and though for a horse to digest, so whole they just slide right through.
 
I buy whole seeds from a place that sells herbs and spices, it was cheaper than the horse stuff and grind it myself. Or I did, I now buy a high concentrated extract as it's less bulky and my horse is fussy
