I found it hell on earth and only lasted 6 weeks! They are too small and land here is wet. They end up a bog in no time at all. Its a constant hassle disposing of droppings as you cant have a muck heap and need to poo pick daily. Theres no storage, no where to put anything. They are usually in housing estates and people are constantly feeding them inappropriate things.
It would be almost worth it, if they were bigger and you had 2. Less than an acre isnt suitable for anything other than a tiny, tiny pony living out 24/7. And most of them are for one horse, and totally isolated, no other horses even within ear shot. They come up all the time because people try it, hate it and leave!
Thanks FC, youve highlighted all the things I am concerned about. Im going to look at a couple this weekend, apparently you get offered 2 because they ask you to swap from one to the other summer and winter. Im in MK now so know how wet our lovely clay fields get. I enquired about 3 years ago and have been on the list since then so Im surprised you say they come up all the time! Nothing to lose by having a look but the more I think about the practicalities the more I think it would be the wrong thing to do
I was offered one. The only way you got two was having two horses. Friends just taken one at Woughton on The Green and theres 4 or 5 empty. She gets one. Shes also panicking as if other people dont move horses into the adjacent fields her horse will be totally alone. I dont know anyone at all who has two paddocks for one horse, so I would double check that very carefully. Its another reason you see so many empty, its because people pay for two paddocks so they can move horses about. I was on the list 6 weeks and got offered a choice of 3.
I pay £20 a week for a stable, grazing, 2 schools, hay and straw provided very cheaply, company, turnout services, electric, a tea room etc. It would cost the same for a muddy field all on my own!
FC, where abouts are you based? that sounds brilliant. They are def offering me 2, both in Loughton and you have to use one in the summer and swap for the winter. Havent seen them yet so dont know how big they are. I have been told I would be the sole tenant but could keep my 14.2 plus a mini for company, would have to pay for 2 then so wouldnt really be cost effective or sensible. When I first applied I liked the idea as it was as near as I could get to being my own boss. Having read the agreement though there are quite a lot of rules so a bit like being on a yard but without the benefits. Still, will def go and look. Would be interested to know which yard you are on and whether they have any space though.
