I have a mini really struggling with the heat and his winter coat (he gets his in September!) I want to clip him but I need to find a mini turnout rug with no fill.

He's a chunky 8h3 so what size would he need?

And any idea where I would get such a rug?

You really can't judge rug size by a pony's height, you will need to measure him. Take the measurement from the middle of his chest (where the rug buckle would go) in a straight line to the end of his hindquarters (where the rug would end). This will give you his rug size. Maxima Equestrian are very good for mini turnout rugs.

I have but rarely use a little Shires for my Shetland. It fits quite nicely, I bought several in the time we’ve had him and most hang down by his knees but the shires one seems a better pony shape cut.
I didn’t rate Ruggles, but seem in the minority there, mine leaked badly from day 1, as in it may as well have been a fly sheet it was that in waterproof ?

Mine are now sporting bib with belly clips and I have absolutely no intention of rugging either.

The smaller mini did have a Ruggles no fill for emergencies but it's as much use as a chocolate tea pot as it leaked from day 1, the company were very unhelpful about returns, so I'll advise not to deal with them!

Cross posted with you. Bleddy company! ??
I’m surprised! I’ve seen nothing but good things about Ruggles. I’d always assumed maybe mine accidentally skipped the waterproofing process ?
I’m not sure why but I didn’t try returning it, I sold it to a lady who wanted basically a poo cover for indoors! Perfect and only any good for that use

Thanks everyone for the replies. I decided to just do a neck and belly clip and no rug, but he was enjoying being clipped so much, he looked proper relieved, and I went a bit overboard and it turned into a high chaser clip

I briefly considered getting a rug for my mini because she kept getting really shivery when it rained.

However, I was surprised to discover that they cost pretty much the same as a rug for a much larger horse, and decided bringing her in and giving her hay was a much cheaper solution!

Do you really need to rug?
If you high trace clip you should help mini regulate temp. It’s early enough that the clip will regrow by winter

OP, if you have a full sized neck cover and can locate an old surcingle, you have a ready made drying off rug.
I have a couple of neck covers at 50 and 100g, they sit nicely on a mini shetlands back, sometimes I'll pop a towel under too, and just tie the lot on with a surcingle. Works for an hour or so to dry off the worst when its really vile. (Dont bother with no fill necks tho).
Usually I'd use this in early spring when they are shedding and on a rare occasion they have got cold when its v wet.

I have a Ruggles for my mini and it has been fine, not leaked at all. As others have said though I barely use it, I don't think iI used it at all last winter and maybe used it a couple of times the winter before when he probably would have been fine without.
