Mineral/Salts Licks and Foals

Is it OK to give my mare and 13 week old foal a lick in the field? Is there any product that should not be given?

My mare loves Horselyx but think I should give them a mineral/salt lick rather than a molassed lick.

Any tips?

D & H do one which is alright for them, think it's called Uniblock, mine have one and they love it but don't gobble too much at a time so very self regulating; it's been out there 3 weeks (3 m & f's) and still 3/4 full. It was £18. I got it from my 'proper' feed merchant, local country stores didn't have it at all.

Mine LOVE the Hymalayan Salt licks! Cannot get enough of them!!! NAF do them now I believe. We have one in each field as well as every stable and the babies absolutely adore them and spend hours literally sucking on them!

Mine too!! Lucera started licking hers when she was less that 24hours old! All my horses (barring my old Anglo - but she was always strange

) absolutely love them, they go into a sort of trance like state when licking them!

The Himilayan licks are supposed to be the best, as they are millions of years old and packed with trace elements and minerals etc, the pinker the lick the better!
