My grumpy boy occasionally and suddenly gets the most disgustingly yacky willy. It was clean and sweet smelling one day, I went to work for 2 days and came back to it being foul. It's slopped on his back legs.....
I had the vet over the summer to sedate him to clean it as he really is a nightmare to deal with. We found a bean too which we removed.
Why is this happening? I'd clean it but he objects strongly, I do try on a regular basis!
Is there anything more I can do?

Will he allow you to lubricate it? That should help keep it clean.

I've never washed a sheath in my life, only ever baby oiled it. Works brilliantly. But also ensure that a bean check is also done regularly.

Could possibly squirt baby oil at it from a distance! Without him knocked out i just can't get near it, I've spent for ever trying! It seems rediculous (and blinkin expensive!!) to get the vet

Dont envy you, my lad had a swollen sheath last year, took time over several weeks to remove beans, id get one, no sign of anymore and two days later more were their, took 4/5 goes in all to remove every one, over a week and half, he too hated being touched their, but think he gave up in end, he realised no matter what he did i was still going to clean, and smegma, omg i was sick of the sight of it, but once he was totaly clear it went, and he was a nicely smelling boy again,.

It's time he learned! I have never had any REAL trouble teaching a horse to tolerate sheath washing (well, alright, one bu**er DID go vertical and put his head through the light sheet in the wash-box roof, but he STILL had his sheath cleaned! )

The key is a horse pipe! Play the hose on the sheath (standing well forward so he can't get you with a cow-kick!) and hose and hose until he tolerates it well. Have CLEAN sponge (car-wash type) in a bucket of warm water with a little sheath cleaner or Hibiscrub added ready. Once he is tolerating the hose - and your hand moving closer - shove soapy sponge into sheath and leave it there for 5 minutes to soak into the muck!

Then, get your hose going again and play it on the outside of the sheath. Reach in for the sponge and pull it out - it will be MINGING! Wash it clean and insert again - still with the hose as a distraction. Repeat until sponge comes out clean. By then, your horse will have figured out that it's GOING to happen - and should be fine next time!

After the last sponge removal, squirt the hose up the sheath to remove any soapy remnants! Job done!

I have done this to literally dozens of colts and geldings - of all ages. It has always worked. BUT - stay calm, and be careful! If horse tries to kick - just keep clear and keep hosing until he gets bored. DON'T get cross with him or get agitated - you need to be very relaxed about it all - then he will learn to be. I find it safer to HOLD the horse with my left hand while hosing with the right - rather than have him tied up. Makes it much harder for him to kick you.

We'll keep trying.... he's such a big horse and soooooo grumpy! Why do some horses get so minging tho?

Make up a mix of baby oil and water in a spray bottle - when its hanging out spray as best you can.

I'd be very careful using Hibiscrub as it is really meant for sterilising a surgeons hands before operating and on thing you need is the natural bugs left behind.

Warm water and baby soap is good to use. I've never washed any of my geldings ever! Washed them for other peoples horses and for demos's for training students. Was advised that it is really better to leave them and that once you start washing you end up having to wash them more & more.

I squirt baby oil up my gelding and my stallion's sheath using a syringe.

It works really well, you can fire it right up there and its all over before they get the chance to react!

My big boy had a very dirty sheath so we had him sedated and i gave it a good old clean out with sponge warm water and baby oil! Fingers crossed its holding up well (was done in September) but is now living out all Winter - so no doubt i will hae to repeat the process in the spring!
