Hi there

I just wanted to put this out there for opinions, we have a tiny miniature pony who lives out most of the year but now he is broken to harness he is getting very hot and I would like to clip him, he is super fluffy - his field is sheltered but has no stable or field shelter and there is no option to add one as it is rented, he is only walking distance to my house and he often comes up and stays overnight in the garden - we have a horse trailer which takes 2 15hh easily. Would there be any reason that I could not 'stable' him in the horse trailer overnight in the winter? I mean if we took the middle partition out so he had plenty of space? Is it in a sheltered space next to the house leading into the garden so it would not get blown around in the wind, I just feel that if he is clipped this might be the best way of keeping him warm and dry in the winter with stable rugs, or would he be ok in his field with a thick rug on? I know I could just use the horse box but I have a strange feeling about it and wonder if there is something obvious I am not thinking about... :-/ I should add that where we live, though it gets very rainy and very windy it very fairly even gets a frost in winter let alone deep snow, generally it is typically mild west Cornwall weather x

I don't see why not, I have three minis and they have a child's chalet style shed in their field that they use as shelter. It was in the garden and they used to love going in it even when it was full of my son's toys,:D so we emptied it and put it in the field. Saying that mine would be quite happy to come and live in the house.:D

For a while several years ago my 3 minis (mother, 3 month old daughter and yearling daughter) lived happily together in a field with 3 trailers as field shelters. I bedded the trailers down and hung haynets in them, and left the back ramps down. The trailers worked well while we needed them there, and the ponies happily loaded themselves after that!

If the floor is wood I would be worried about it rotting over time. also if the sides and roof are metal I would be worried it would be cold and get condensation

Size wise though I think it would be ok

I had a garden shed made by a local company for my chickens that has a stable type door and is lined - in effect a mini stable, perhaps thats an option instead?

Could you put down a rubber mat to be safe, remember if pony is in there likely to pee so wooden floors will rot in time, but otherwise a brilliant idea, something is better than nothing.

I'd just like to point out that you used the words 'tiny miniature pony' and 'super fluffy' in your post but didn't post a pic!

I'm sure we'd all be able to judge the suitability of his housing if we had a super-cute photo to work with :-)

Sorry have been off line thanks to BT  thank you all so so so much for your posts, that's all I needed to hear then :) the horse trailer is being re painted next week and made all lovely ready for him to have as a bedroom ;) have purchased some rubber flooring, the floor is aluminium so hopefully as long as I lift the rubber mats it will be ok when he is not in there, the roof is metal but the walls are wooden and given that down here in windy west Cornwall we never get too cold hopefully he will be ok, have got him a new little stable rug just to be sure he's comfortable though :D I will post a pic as soon as I can, he was a rescue, not too long ago he was destined for the meat man, but £15 bought his life, at only three and with all papers and good breeding, passports etc it boggles the mind. I'll post before and afters!

One other thing I was thinking about doing was putting some rubber or some padded vinyl bumpers inside, because he travels loose (walks straight under breech bars!!) I worry about him bumping, though I think he just sits on the floor as soon as we move, what would people recommend and why the heck can I not find ready made pads anywhere? Am I being thick? Would folk suggest full lining of rubber foam walls (too dark then?) or half mat or pads and if pads do you make your own? I'm concerned about screwing into what is only a thin wooden wall securely - any thoughts would be super welcome :) thanks again for being so welcoming xxx

Hes probably better off out with rugs.
Dont be tempted to over rug though.
They soon grow their coats back and he is bound to be a good doer.

What about a shed, or childw wendy house?

I would not favour the trailer as a stable.
Sitting on wheels he wont feel "stable" for him.
It will wobble and rock, not like being at ground level.

I'm sure the trailer would be fine but not really necessary. My fully clipped tb lived out all winter with the assistance of a decent turnout so I'm sure your mini would be fine too :) I actually think they're often warmer out as they can move about to keep warm
