Mini rant- flu jags!

So, looked at Twiggy's passport at the beginning of august and saw that she had last had her flu jags on 01/09/09- therefore the next one is due on 01/09/10, right?

So told the YO that she was due and that the vet would be out to do it soon just to make sure she would be in at the right time, and she told me that i didnt need to get the vet out as she had horses due at the end of the month as well and she would ensure that Twigs was done with them to save on call out fees.

So me being an idiot thought that it was confirmed and forgot all about it until yesterday, when YO said to me that the vet had been out the day before.

I asked her if Twiggy had been done, and she said no.

I started panicking and asking why not, doesnt she need it, what do we do ect.

She then told me that i had given her Twig's passport too late (even though she had had it for about a fortnight) and that she was over due by 2 weeks and that she needed to start the whole course again!
Please correct me if i'm wrong but i thought that flu jabs were once annually and and as long as they were done before it's over 12 months then it was fine!

We have the vet coming out on friday to look at Twiggy's spavin, so can it be done then or is it too late?

it will be fine if you dont compete with the BRC or any affiliated society.

If you do then unfortuantely you will need to restart the whole lot.

As the other post has said. Depends not just which societies you compete with now, but also who you hope to compete with in the future, as they are able to look back over the horses complete vaccination history and if there are ANY gaps of even a day they can stop you entering the showground or competing until the course is commenced again from the start. You can compete as soon as the initial jab is done though, you don't have to wait until the end of the whole course, so that just makes a mockery of the rule if you ask me.
Its absolutely ridiculous but thats the rules!

It needs to be done to the date - or you start all over again.

I've found it's much easier to take responsibility for these things myself - and not rely on others to organise things for my horse.

Phone your vets, make an appointment and meet them there with your horse and passport.

Your vet may well insist on re-starting. It isn't just affilliated shows - several unaffilliated around us also ask for certificates. It would also bar you from pony club or Riding Club camp - possibly even from the rallies as well. It may also affect your insurance.

It is a bit of a pain as immunity almost certainly hasn't lapsed. But it gets the vaccine manufacturers more money!
