not obviously about a mini !!!!!!!!

we have a footpath in the field where the geldings are,it goes from the top stile in a line to the bottom stile if that makes sense,so why do bl**dy people walk thier dogs all over the field ! i confronted one the other day that was totally of the footpath and she got argumentative grrrr,i said there is no need for that and please just stick to the footpath she said but we have lived round here for 30 years and have the owners permission i said no you dont, they were also picking blackberries, that aparently is steeling unless the land owner has given you permission to pick them !!!
its a 13 acre field so they dont need to go near any hedges or round round the whole field, the dogs run round the horse etc, luckily the horse dont mind,it just annoys me so much !!!!!
sorry rant over !!!

i had a footpath running through a field at my last place, and i fenced a path 4' wide for the walkers, along the boundary. they didn't have to walk along it, but it was a lot safer than going in with my youngsters, especially if they had a dog! i'd just tell people that you aren't responsible if they get hurt by the horses, which are big, skittish and unpredictable.

We have the same and it can be frustrating sometimes. I get worried about gates being left open, or my rather over large over friendly cob mugging someone for a packet of polos!

You could write a polite sign for the gate requesting that dogs are kept on leads as there are horses in the field...?

If it's your land (which I think it is?) then why don't you put some big signs up telling them to keep to the footpath and to keep dogs on leads at all times because of the horses?

If it's a public footpath there's nothing you can do about them walking on the it as they have right of way, but I'm sure there are things that would encourage them to stay on the footpath.

yes it is our land,we have put signs up etc in the past but they dont take any notice !!
it is a public footpath put they dont stick to it !
they dont have rite of way over the whole field but they all think they do,we do have over friendly horses in there and my boy who is 17hh !

If it is your land, and they said they had the owners persmission, why didn't you say that you were the owner and no they bloody didn't!

do you have to let them in on your land? Can you not remove the stiles and mark the land private property due to abuse of the paths etc?

Can you fence off the rest of the field so they can only follow the lines of the footpath? It might mean you have to put another gate in if you would need to walk over the footpath to get the horses in, but it's got to be worth it. Also big signs saying "do not feed or pet horses" would be an idea.

You can't obstruct the Right of Way (as that's illegal) but you can fence along either side of it so that the walkers are funnelled along the definitive path (allow them a 2m width). I do a lot of survey work for my job and have walked fenced paths through horses fields hundreds of times. It will be a pain to set up, but worth it once you're done!!

lol we are the local farmers !!!

i did say we are the owners and said you havnt got permission
she pulled a face and carried on grrrrrrr

its not really practical to put a fence though the field,as op said i would love to block of the stiles and say due to misuse !!!

if there was a big bull in there i wouldn't go in either lol and we always had cows etc growing up but ive turned in to a wimp now lol

Not you defintely can't block off the stiles! The CC would be down on you straight away.

Not much you can do really except put notices up about keeping the dogs on a lead.

I also think it is OK to pick blackberries because they are growing wild, not cultivated, so it isn't stealing.

You also have a "duty of care" for any one on your land, trespassing or not - but that means you mustn't put traps in for them.

When I put my grumpy mare out in a field with a f/p I put up an electric fence along the route - but luckily is runs down the side of a hedge, so it wasn't a problem.

Not much help is it? But from a rider's point of view, wanting to keep the bridlepaths open ...............................

Only problem with bulls if it should harm one of them and no notice was in place to warn them of the danger, then it would end up with legal action from the injuried party.....but,I would so be tempted!

We have a footpath that runs right across the middle of the field so would not be practical to fence it off. The majority of people are responsible, stick to the path, keep dogs on leads etc but the odd one always spoils it for the rest. On one memorable occasion I turned out my horses in the morning to find a gate closed off and a tent pitched in the closed off field!! Needless to say the occupants got an early wake up call and politely (not) asked to leave.

that's the problem, nobody keeps their dogs on leads,we have 4 dogs and always have them on leads !!
I'm going to have to put signs up again to remind them that a)its not safe for their dogs and wouldn't want it trampled and b) i peed off with the dog mess they like to leave around.
perhaps i could take my dogs in their garden for a walk !!!!!!!!!

I think it would be worth phoning your local Council, explaining and saying to them you are worried in case someone gets hurt petting/approaching the horses and dogs are not kept on leads, not keeping to the footpath etc and worrying your horses. I do know if the dogs are worrying any livestock that's illegal and you can do summat about that. Worth a quick call, if nothing else, to cover your back in case anything occurs.

Good luck - and grrrrrrrr back at em!!

I would fence it off - we had to do it lots on our land when we lived down south - particually on the edges of the moor - ramblers dont seem to realise where moor land ends and private property begins!

ours was bull electric fencing with big 'beware electric' signs - they didnt like it but if they were in the field it was easier to explain (shout) about them being on private land - as they had directly left the footpath.

im going to put more signs up as they keep vanishing in to thin air(strange that) !
its in the laws, keep dogs on leads etc but nobody does,i will put a sign on the top gate telling them that its no a footpath and please stick to the proper footpath etc,if not il sit up there for the day grrrrrring at everyone !!!! lol

Is your fence electric? Could you jsut not wrap wire arouns the stile handle and attach it to the electric fence - hehe - just leave it for a day. As good as this access thing is, its also a joke if you own land! It puts livestock at risk, to me letting a dog be allowed to walk (unleashed) though a field of animals (not all dogs are bad I know but they do get a bit excited!) is like putting a 2yrold in a china shop and not keeping watch.

Are you allowed to shoot the dog if it distresses the horses? Its totally $hite that you are liable for whatever happens to whomever is on your land - just so so unfair! So if mr Fwit falls down a bunny hole, snaps ankle, then its YOUR fault if its on the path?? PAH!

Sorry, in a peed off mood with the world today!

beau2005 your 100% rite and we would get the blame, which is a p*** take !!!
we dont have electric fence though as that would be funny lol

it just frustrates me alot, and have just watched two more people walking all over the field !!!!!! no respect !!!

One of the precious yards I was at provided a 2m wide post and rail walkway at the edge of the field for the footpath which ended up being the shape of a dogleg due to the shape of the field. The Council came along and said because it deviated from the straight line of the footpath they had to put kissing gates in on the section that wasn't straight (If you get what I mean).
Totally and utterly stupid! My mare and newborn foal were in there at the time so we ended up putting huge signs up saying to take care as she was very protective of her baby. This put most people off but we still had some t$ats that took there toddlers over to them in the field FFS.

you have seen the field, trouble is that its huge and also the footpath goes across and down the middle of the field it would be a nitemare to put fences straight through the middle and not practical, everyone knows there are horses in and have been for 40 odd years, its just the lack of respect and the p taking that they do !!!

I have a footpath at the bottom of my filed but I as suggested have mine in an electric fenced section and the let the walkers go along a 2m wide path to their next stile BUT.. a ciuole of weekends ago I found tow lads aged about 13 one lying on my shetlands back and the other one trying to chase him round the field.
I was very cross.
Needless to say the fence now has a mega charge on it!

You would have to run a fence all the way along the edge and down one side to the exit of the footpath. They had to do that at the farm I had my pony on years ago, the footpath cut straight across the field so they fenced it around the edge of it which gave them a longer footpath and a safer walk as my old pony used to chase people.
The only other alternative would be to fence the field in half with a footpath through the middle and alternate the fields
