Hardy, feisty, fun, bossy, big dogs in little bodies, coats need a bit of upkeep.
Do your research and go to a good breeder who health checks their breeding stock (IE screens mum and dad for inheritable disorders, not just who 'vet checks' the puppies - they are a popular breed and easy to whelp so fodder for puppy farmers and backyard breeders - if you're going to part with cash, reward the people who do it right x
My friend at work has just got one, who is all of 10 weeks old and cc has described him to a t! Certainly feisty. Extremely loving, though and has fantastic eyebrows even at such a tender age.
I rather like them as well - nice hardy little dogs with big personalities. Very playful - can be noisy though (and when they are, OH MY plug yer ears!).
As CC describes, their coat can need a bit of work, and their ears will need constant attention.
They are the best. Great characters, Think they are a big dog in a small dogs body. Ours gets clipped every six weeks or so ,so not to much of an issue. Not sure why ears will need constant attention ours don't! Absolutely love them but then am totally biased
Re schnauzer ears requiring attention - speaking as a groomer and in a professional capacity - more than any other breed of dog, I find that schnauzers have the toughest ears to pluck, as the hair tends to be very thick and profuse -- and extremely tight rooted. Schnauzers, more than any other breed in general, have the biggest reaction to having them plucked (and it's probably cos it bloomin hurts having that much thick hair coming out!). Some people are blissfully ignorant of the work that a groomer does to keep the ears healthy - but if I could trade one part of my job away, it would be plucking schnauzer ears!
Schnauzer ears can be the stuff of nightmares - especially the pets with woolly coats.
I resorted to buying a nasal hair trimmer for one particular bitch. Hair like cotton wool that would not pluck out of the ears.
People need to consider them as terriers rather than lap dogs.
I had one many years ago - wonderful faithful loving dog - however as already said they are definitely high maintenance as far as their coats are concerned.
I have a bichon so high maintenance coat care is OK, he/she will be booked into groomers when the bichon goes, Is there such a thing as a schnauzer breed rescue? as it I can I'd like to give one in need a nice home
