Miniature horses or shetlands?

Never had an American mini but you couldn't beat our mini Shetland he is brilliant. Just about to (hopefully) start training another little girl. Going to see new potential loaner tonight.

I have one of each. They're both little shits but oh my goodness they are cute and they love being the centre of attention. Be warned...you will need to secure your grazing like Fort Knox!
 
mini shetland. ours is hilarious, hey are great little characters. and very tough little things
 
You need extreme escape proof fencing...no amount of electric will work so don't even entertain that idea. We have two Mini Shetlands and I wouldn't trade them for the world...they are two now and absolutely amazing in every way. Xx
 
Well my shetlands must be an exception, i have 4 minis and a british mini they are lovely and placid and are kept on a track system with electric fencing with rich grass on the other side and they dont bother trying to get it. I dont think there is much differance with them being loving or intelligent.
 
Mini shetlands! They're fun, extremely clever - sometimes too much so! So whilst shetlands can have a bit more spark and attitude American mini's are a bit more docile and obliging.

Mine too....I don't they are any more likely to get out of electric than any other Equine.
Mine are kept in on one strand at chest height...as long as it's working correctly, they stay where they are .
And agree...no difference ein temperament IMO. Ponies are cheeky and fun no matter their breed 😀
 
My mini wouldn't even walk under one single strand of electric on the top of a fence post, which he could do, without even lowering his head! Same as any horse, train them properly and have properly insulated and working fencing and they are fine. In all things actually. Shetlands get a bad reputation as a breed but would you drag a 17hh horse out the field and expect a small child to be able to groom it and ride it with little to no preparation. No. We've had several Shetlands and all have been super ponies.

Mine too. I've had a 46 inch Shetland and now I've got a 31 inch. Neither of them behave any differently from my other horses, except that my little one is incredibly affectionate. I crouch down with my arm over her back and scratch her far shoulder and she gently mutually grooms my knee. I wouldn't allow a bigger horse to do that. It's my one concession to her size, otherwise she gets treated like a big horse. Neither of my Shetlands has ever tried to escape.

I get a lot more trouble from her lookalike 16.1 'brother'. He has worked out how to undo a draw bolt on the outside of a door with a bar across the opening. And turn on a lever tap which is behind a plate designed to stop him doing exactly that. He must have the strongest, longest tongue in the world!
