Up to what age/size child would you expect an average miniature Shetland to carry?
I've just began to look around for my nearly five year old daughter (shes quite tall) and one has popped up locally but I fear she may outgrow a mini too quickly?
 
I don't have kids but my friends daughter is 7 and would be far too tall for a mini, not sure if she is 'standard length' though! Mini's are only up to 34"/8.2hh, you may be better off looking for a standard Shetland or a Shetland cross

That sounds like the best bet as no doubt she will be on a lead rein for a while and once off it if she is tall she will need a bigger pony. Perhaps if you want to show though a 12hh would be the ideal size
 
I think she would be too big as in length of her leg :)
Minis pony is 12hh, and she is tall , I think 12.2hh might be pushing it a bit, I don't regret buying her pony at all, but she was only 5 when we got him, and now wish we had got something nearer 11hh, she is still light enough that that would still work.

On the upside as long as she stays as light as she is now, they hopefully, have many years together

This was her a couple of weeks ago, and as you can see, at 12hh he is plenty big enough!!!

However she does do games and polo cross so maybe we notice it a little more, a smaller pony would be more ideal for her ( however a more sensible one would also fit the bill :D )
 
That's a super smart pony there!

We have a mini x standard who is about 36inches I reckon (can't remember!). He carries my 7, 5 and 3 year olds no problems. My daughter (who is the 5yo) is perfect on him just now. My friends 8 year old daughter has had a few goes on him and she is fine on him too.

He is a bit bigger than a mini, but small for a standard.mill teach him to drive soon too so we can keep him going! He's delightful.
 
sorry but does he have quite long feet for a pony or it is just the angle of the picture, they look massive. Lovely pony by the way and your daughter looks real sweet
 
My younger sister has only recently outgrown her 34in Mini and shes just turned 10! :eek: She was hunting him in March! :D She broke him in when she was almost 3 (he was 3) and we never thought he would last her this long. Obviously her being small and stick thin has been of some benefit! :p
 
Lovely pony M W and agree he's plenty big enough! In fact your daughter looks a similar size to mine. Have you got a side on pic at all?
I've only got pics of my daughter on my two horses!!
She rides my friends little dartmoor ATM who's a good size for her and she used to ride a highland but she was a bit too wide for her legs!
