I rescued a miniature shetland colt a week ago. He was bought as a lawnmower and for the non horsey owners daughter to ride. The little chap she told me was 2 years old... Had the dentist out this evening for carson and got her to take a look at the little guy.She thinks he is a yearling, 18 months tops. So bearing that in mind along with the fact that he is only 30 inches tall do i need to be feeding him some sort of youngstock mix ? been giving him a small scoop of happyhoof once a day as condition wise he isn't to bad but obviously i don't want him to get fat but i do want him to have all the nutrients etc that he needs and hasn't been getting in his life so far. There are photos of him in the gallery if anyone wants to see him. Thanks in advance

I could be completely wrong, but I'm sure there was a post a few weeks ago about someone who had been sold a mini by the stud and told it was however old, then vet and/or dentist had told them it was six months younger. They asked on here who they should believe as somebody else had told them mini's teeth are slower developing, so show them to be 6 months younger than they actually are. Somebody posted and confirmed this was the case.
Like I said though, I'm not 100% certain on this, it's just a post I *think* I can remember reading.

hiya, yep i read that shetlands teeth develop differently hence why i asked the dentist to take a look. She gave his age as he doesn't have any molars yet or something like that. His age doesn't bother me as he is a rescue pony but if he is only 12 to 18 months old then i just want to make sure i'm feeding him correctly. thanks for replying.

I would just ring your vet and see what they suggest ? Happy Hoof is a good alrounder, but may not have enough of what a younster needs. Not very "up" on feeds, as I just use Healthy Hooves, if it was me, I'd have to ask the vet. sm x
