The situation:
- I have a horse that currently spits his dummy out whenever he goes in the arena.
- I have a problem back, which recently had me off work for a week and barely able to walk.
- I am doing unaffiliated SJ to get him used to being in the arena (we went through the same with dressage and now we are fine).
- I wore short/sleeved shirt and body protector last time the steward threatened to disqualify me for having uncovered arms.
- I have zero tolerance for heat so do not want to wear a jacket AND a BP.

Q - Can I get away with a long sleeved shirt (or XC rugby shirt) and BP only?

totally depends on the venue. most places if it is really hot allow you to wear short sleeved shirts, but totally depends on the venue as they usually have their own rules regarding health and safety.

It all depends on the centre, I was at riding club SJ the other week when it was really hot. We had to wear jackets in the ring but in the warm up it didn't matter. They tried to see if we could go without jackets but the course builder said we had to wear jackets. Most places can be quite lenient with jackets when it is hot.

Can you not warm up without a jacket and then just before you go into the ring put your jacket on if you have to wear a jacket as it will only be for 2 minutes?

If its any help at BSJA as long as your competition shirt had caps on the sleeve rather than sleeveless you could wear that

Unaffiliated I wouldn't care, I've turned up in pink joddies before now!

Shame last time I went BSJA I used a bib; so had to swelter whilst everyone else was in cool competition shirts!

Gosh didn't know there were rules about it. Never wear a jacket for jumping. Only go to small local shows though. Usually wear short sleeved shirt and BP, but once when it was raining and I had hacked there I jumped in a red cagoule with fluorescent tabard over the top and no-one said anything!

Title made me giggle though. Was thinking on lines of bikini top and a thong!

I have threatened to wear a wife-beater (string) vest and put a knotted hankie on top of my helmet.

Found a solution! I have ordered a long sleeved shirt from work (we get workwear free). Until that arrives, I will wear my long sleeved XC rugby shirt.

BSJA you are only allowed not to wear a jacket if the judge gives you permission, same goes for a waterproof coat if it is raining

Its strange isn't it? We do a dangerous, potentially fatal or crippling sport, but we are required to dress like waiters for it. You don't see rugby league players in 3-piece suits and top hats, or ice hockey players in taffeta ballgowns, yet we go along with these.

Eventually someone will get seriously injured, sue the organisers (and/or BSJA) for millions and the rules will change over night to "body protectors IN, smart jackets OUT".
