My Friend is looking to get a miniture donkey. She would prefer to rescue if possible so wondered if anyone knew of any places who rehome them? Would prefer in the midlands but will travel
Always better to get two donks. I have one (a big one 15:3) BUT he's lived with horses all his life. They a very sociable and really need other donkeys. Splitting up a pair can even be fatal.
I understand that a lot of reputable donkey rescues will only let you have them 2 at a time because they bond so strongly. but, on the plus side, donks are very cheap to run.
i could be wrong, but I think minature donkeys are quite expensive to buy, so I cant imagine many end up in rescue centres as there would be a profit to be made if they were sold - although stand to be corrected.
As others have said, a pair would be much more sensible than a single donkey!
the minis are lovely, however, I will always prefer the 'standard' sized donkeys, as a child I helped a lady out with her Donkeys, she had a small herd (she used to breed them) - the Jack (stallion) was just amazing, when I left to go to uni I was really upset, and sat in the field with them and got a bit teary, he came over and just put his head in my lap - never forget that!
It is a fact that minis are quite expensive to buy. However, some breeders will sell an oversize one at a reasonable price. When I say oversize, it's still appreciably smaller than a standard donkey.
Why not contact the breed society? The people there might be able to point you in the right direction. It is the Miniature Mediterranean Donkey Association.
Try http://www.donkeydriving.co.uk/index.html. Debbie has some miniatures (although I think they are jacks) but she would certainly be able to advise you. I know them well as they are in the adjoining field to my old girl and she is nuts about them!
