My pony has short legs and his undercarriage is getting very smeared in mud if they have a hoolie round the field! I've been gently brushing off the dried mud that's on the outer bit every evening but as of last few days have noticed he has some tiny small scabs/spots just up inside where the mud and water in the field has got splashed up - where the crinkly bits of skin are of the pouchy bit if you know what I mean. It's itchy and gently bathing it with warm water and drying it thoroughly seems to be helping but I don't really want to be wetting it repeatedly as it's a natural environment there of its own which should really be left alone. Does anyone know a gentle suitable cream that you can apply to such areas of skin that would help minor rain scald there or is this something I should really be asking the vet? It's the first year I've wondered whether I shouldn't have had that area clipped out as I suspect his hair would have stopped a lot of the mud getting further.

Ok you might laugh at this suggestion, but what about putting some Bepanthen nappy rash cream on it? It's brilliant stuff! You can get it in Superdrug for a few pounds.

I've had to give it a clean again tonight - was very itchy tonight, he's lining up and positioning himself for me to deal with his itch so if I'm not careful I'm going to get a reputation as a horse fondler! Definitately needs cream to ease/soothe the skin/itch it I think so will find something inocuous and unperfumed. Did wonder about a dab of aloe vera. Someone at yard wondered if it could be yeasty/thrushy but no sign of any discharge from that area.
