Thought I would post this in case it helps anyone else in my situation. My horse is stabled at night all year round as he is a good doer and needs a break from the grass. During winter he tends to get a bit snotty and coughs in the morning when he is first let out of his stable into the field. It has always worried me because he obviously has an irritation to the dust etc. If things get too bad (snotty nose or more than 6 coughs in the morning I soak his hay).
This year he is on really good quality hay and I have had no problems feeding it dry up until recently. He started to get snotty and coughed a few times...so I thought I would try an experiment. I have fed his hay off the floor from a big water bucket for the last week and he has stopped coughing completely and no snotties after riding either...it is amazing!
Thought I would share as it may help others...
