MIPS - failure?

The explanation I read was that when your head stops moving, your brain doesn't, and although it's cushioned by some fluid, it carries on and hits the inside of your skull with considerable force. That's what MIPS is supposed to reduce. I replaced all three of my hats with MIPS this year.

do you mind if I ask what makes of hat?

Agree that if the hat snapped, it worked - that could have been your neck or your skull. I'd deffo send it to Uvex though if you're concerned as you're going to have to scrap it now anyway.

It probably depends how you fall though.
I always seem to bang my head - I must learn to curl up a bit
I’m pretty sure the dial was tight but it could’ve worked loose a bit.
I bought it online, so I’ll see if I can get Uvex to check it out fix it - I suspect I need to ditch it 😬

Just re-reading this thread - did you have the hat fitted by someone? I thought I knew how a hat that fits should feel but had always had my hat fitted anyway. When I was fitted for my most recent hat, it turned out that my head was actually two sizes smaller than was previously fitted (the last 2 or 3 times!!) due to the shape of my head yet the hats had always felt fine to me. Did you get the hat fit checked in person before buying it? Although it has the dial I'd imagine that it could only do so much to make it fit as the structure of the hat would still determine it's shape? Was the hat maybe not quite the right fit/ shape and so you didn't get the optimum performance from it?

I nearly always got knocked out whenever I fell off at shows so I invested in a hit air that inflates round your neck and can therefore prevent whiplash.

Not had a fall since but was hoping that was the solution as my head always followed through after my body hit the deck.

I did put it in the next post Paddy, I've been using Bell Sixers for ten years now. They are tested to at least the same level and type of impact as riding hats because of the extreme nature of cross country bike competition. With the exception of the vents, which allow twigs to penetrate and can't now be found in riding hats. That's why I started wearing them, when my vented Caldene got too old. They are low at the back and have good cover at the side of the forehead, the visor flicks back or breaks off on impact. I really rate them. Small fits a 55/56cm head perfectly.

My official crash hat is a Charles Owen.

There are other hats by Bell and others that look very similar to this but none have the depth or side coverage.

thanks.
OH did use a cycle helmet for riding a long time ago but he got exactly the twigs stuck in it you mention. Still we do need new bike helmets and I hadn't thought of cross country ones.

No I didn't actually. I only bought it because it was drastically reduced in a sale !
I will for the next one though and will probably go back to the CO which always fit well
I'll try a MIPs again as well if it feels comfortable.

Regarding the air jackets, it's a Helite Gilet which has saved me several times. However I hadn't thought about the neck part helping so will look at Hit Air too in that respect.

I don't think Hit Air do any more to prevent whiplash than Helite/P2. They come up higher, but there is little purpose (and some people feel there is risk) in them coming up higher than the base of your hat.

I wouldn't, personally, buy a Hit Air because unlike the others they don’t replace the air bag on servicing and say a jacket over 5 years old should be replaced. I also don't like the gap just below the neck which is nicely sized to allow a pole to hit your backbone if you are spun off backwards into a fence or a jump.

I wear cross country cycle helmets for this reason. I just swapped mine for the same model with Mips and I would say the weght is almost identical.

Bell Super 6 are shaped very like horse riding hats except they have more vents.
Right, that is very interesting and the vents would suit me too as I get so hot. I’ve noticed my grandson age 6 has a Mips bike helmet, which has got to be good. Seen the link in your other post as well. They do look quite neat!

My HS1 weighs 713 gms with my silk.
My new Charles Owen hat with its own silk (largely mesh) weighs 570 gms. Technically it is one size smaller and the straps are thinner and lighter. But the modern hat is the lighter of the two.

It has vents under the silk, both front and back, something I have never had in a hat before.

One major difference (demonstrated to me in the shop) is that the new hat puts on from the front and does not touch the back of my neck. The back of my neck can feel tender (normal in old people says my doctor daughter) so this is a blessing in disguise.

Just wondering if anyone here does neck strengthening exercises as part of their off the horse training? It's an important part of sports that have a high risk of concussion (boxing, martial arts, NFL etc) because as stronger neck can help prevent or reduce the impact of concussions. I do some weighted neck work as part of my weights routine.

You could start here for suggestions:

Some of those can be done with weights too.

Working your trap muscles helps too, e.g. shrugs.

I'll dig out some more information later.

However I would recommend seeing a physio if you have neck issues before trying exercises just to make sure you won't make things worse! 😃

Believe F1 drivers so a lot of head and neck weights work too, and not just because of the G forces they may be pulling

I would get the one that gives a little tug as you remove, that has even pressure round the curcumfrence as far as possible, and that you wear for half an hour in the shop that doesn't leave a big red stripe on the forehead!

Also, if it has tie strings at the back, that can affect the fit hugely.

The one where the shop makes you wear it for 20+ minutes before selling it to you, and the tighest you can easily bear it for that time.

Recently I found that Virginia Tech, in the US who have a lab involved in testing, put out this saftey ratings list.
I wanted to see where my MIPs TraumaVoid helmet [EQ in Aus] sat.
Its doing well, and always interesting to see how the really expensive helmets rate [worse than the MIPs ones]

ps it says 'football' but they're equestrian

Interesting number two - TuffRider Carbon Fiber is cheap and has no MIPs.

uvex mips is 11th, and Truama void is 8th

I can't remember the exact reasons why, without rereading the paper, but the study wasn't very robust in how they tested the helmets so it's results should be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

amazed at the difference in price.
decided to go MIPS. Got us each a champion with MIPS. Cost £200 each

then thought about the cycle helmets and thought another £400 coming up. Found they were less than £100 each. Such a difference between cycling and riding. :D

Hmmm, depends. You can spend a lot on cycle helmets too (I know, my OH has a collection 🙄)

You need the right hat, though. Most cycle hats don't cover the area I feel safe in*, and I won't buy anything that isn't rated for cross country riding and/ or stunt riding.

My bike hats retail at about the same price as my Charles Owen skull but I got them marked down to half as end of range colours

*they don't go low enough at the back or cover the temples.

yes I know. I am just starting to research them. I found yours marked down to £99 on your link. Hadn't considered googling for "cross country" will give that a go. Thanks

I have always hated the "sit on top of your head like a plate" ones.

if you have an recommendations (this is for leisure riding on rural cycle tracks with a bit of road for oldies) please let me know.

also any suggestions for what not to get are very welcome.
