Third time this year I've tested it out ( I need to stop) and third time I've walked away with head feeling fine.

My broken nose on the other hand not so lucky. Note to self when there are low branches you have to really duck
This is something I am most definitely going to purchase for my next horse.

Sympathies for the nose and the cost of a new hat. I'm due anew hat early next year (if I don't fall off beforehand) and will definitely be getting a MIPs one.
I am so concerned about the concussion and dementia in later life link that its really worrying me. I know that I'm probably being silly but I have a 26% chance greater risk of contracting dementia because of my previous concussions which is a scary thought.

I think I will have to start doing puzzles and eating lots of folic acid.

It's a worry isn't it. I would like to do MMA but the head contact side of it stops me. I've done judo in the past and had some fairly heavy falls with that. Luckily, never a concussion, but plenty of head rattles.

I think at amateur level head strikes are minimal in training. I actually look worse than a lot of the fighters coming out of the apex on sat

I also have very bad eyesight, so am at major risk for detached retina. So it's just not worth the risk! I will, at some point, get back to BJJ though.

@Kunoichi73 No definitely not, sight is important. Interestingly I was just listening to Paul Craig talking about some tests he has been doing and that there is a link to neck strength and reduced affects of concussion so maybe thats what we need to be doing!

You make me feel better for getting off for a branch when the person behind me said it would be fine if I got right down 😅
Current hat is mips but partly as that fitted better than the non mips version. Pretty standard with bike hats now and I’m surprised at the relatively slow take up riding wise

I relied on our sadler to fit me with a new hat and I like it like that. My new hat sits high on my head and doesnt weigh on the back of my elderly neck.
But strictly speaking my new hat was extra and not essential expenditure. I have expensive kit as I dont have the expense of owning a horse.

Ouch!! Thank god for the hat!

I was thinking of one of these but no one near me sells them. I’d have to go two and a half hours to get one.

So is it possible to get one by measuring your head I wonder? Not ideal but then neither is a brain injury…

Possibly for the Uvex Exxential MIPs as it has an adjustable dial at the back and fits a range of sizes. e.g. 57-59cm. But I have always tried one on in shop / trade stand first.

I have the Uvex Exxential MIPs and love it. But it isnt the highest rated on the testing ranks, so not sure it is safer than some of the other non MIPs options.

We have to do that. Even if one lives in London or Surrey, the saddlers are few and far between.
First I need to phone in and the retailer gets in the hat in my likely size or a couple of sizes. And arrange for their fitter to be there.
At the height of Covid, our saddler kindly brought the hat out into the car park so OH and I didnt need to risk our lives going into the big store.

Or an excuse to go to an event - olympia / big competition / Your Horse Live or similar with trade stands?

by take up I meant by manufacturers not people.

I went to somerset to get mine in my work christmas holiday, so 3.5 hours as the locals here had nothing that fitted and I knew I had 2 options with good stock near each other in somerset (unicorn and wychanger- the winner came from wychanger in the end). Previously I've always bought at badminton/burghley for the number of options available.
My current hat is the most comfortable I've ever had, head measuring IME rarely works as shape varies so much. though if you know what feels 'right' you can always online order and return.

I do neck strengthening stuff as part of my weights routine.

If you want a good article on neck training, this is a good place to start:

Yes I ordered the uvex adjustable one mentioned on this thread and it's been great. I've just ordered my third (it's been a year of falling off after not having had a fall for about 8 years!)

How are you now, webble? I hope that the swelling and discomfort are all improving.

Was there somebody with you at the time to help scrape you off the ground and to catch the horse? You had a fair wallop.

Plus I hope that you managed to get the stains off your hi viz.

I'm not too bad thank you, it's been interesting watching the bruises develop. I was with a friend but amazingly I got straight up unclipped my air vest and ran after Kiki. He had headed for the place we had holidayed the previous month and a kind local caught him. I got cleaned up (ish) got back on and rode back to the box and drove home

My vet friend suggested cold water to get the blood and mud out and with a bit of elbow grease it looks good as new, replacement cannister in and off we go.

My new UVEX hat arrived today too
