We bought a 10 year old gelding at the end of May. We viewed him once (as it was a very long drive away from us) and fell in love with him. We did notice a couple of marks on his withers and the seller told us that it was old wounds which were healing. At this point you have probably guessed that we are first time buyers!! we took her word for his health as she seemed very genuine and knowledgeable. However, he was delivered to our local livery yard on Thursday and yesterday the owner noticed the marks and asked us to quarantine him until he had been vet checked. We had a vet come out this morning - he has diagnosed sarcoids, a fairly mild case however he is confident that this should have lowered the asking price by around £1000 (we paid £2300 for him) I phoned the seller last night and she said that her vet had checked him and ruled out ring worm and said that it was just a wound mark. However she is aware of what sarcoids are and I find it difficult to believe that neither she nor her vet were aware of the problem. We are now faced with future vet fees and the uncertainty of whether his condition will remain stable or gradually deteriorate. I would appreciate any thoughts or comments on our dilemma.
