We are struggling to get straw at the moment in fact can't get any at all. someone has suggested that miscanthus is an alternative which is relatively cost effective as well as a good bedding. Its for a mare and 6 week foal is it suitable for them. keen to hear anyones advice or recommendations.

I used Miscanthus on my old yard - really really good stuff. Much much prefer it to shavings and straw - I've been using dusty shavings at the new yard (all they currently have is these shavings) but I'm planning on moving her onto new Petlife paper bedding (not like 'normal' paper bedding - much much more absorbent, biodegradable etc.) - www.sphsupplies.co.uk are looking to stock it - so watch this space!

i changed mine onto miscanthus after using it at work, i really like it and its cheaper than shavings. it takes quite a few bales to start the bed off then maybe one a week after that but it depends on the horse i think. we had a stallion on it that could have done with 5 bales a week but i think 1 a week is more normal. comfort wise i'd probably prefer shavings but pricewise miscanthus wins and the horses seem perfectly happy with their beds

Thumbs up from me too
