Does anyone use this as an alternative to shavings or straw? What do you think? I've gone gone over to it from using shavings and I would say its a lot more absorbant, slightly cheaper and bio-degradable
I am sure there are plenty of makes, but I rejected the one I can buy locally because it was sooo dusty. As soon as I opened a bale it made me cough and made two of my horses cough, to the point that I had to remove the bed and start again. It is a shame because it is cheap and it works. It's just too dusty for me.
The yard uses it, and whilst a new bale can be dusty (suposed to be dampaned down) once its down its fine, I dont find it cheap though at £6.50 a bale and we use around 4 as a top up weekly
I have just gone onto this. I find it much less slippery as a bed than the hemp I used before and doesn't move as much, but I am not convinced it is more absorbent. It is dusty when you first open the bag, but the dust seems heavier and settles very quickly.
I changed because it is suspected my horse suffers from allergic conjunctivitis and he always lies down on the side of his watery eye. So I put it down to the hemp.
I do like the look of the bed. You have to be careful when mucking out that you don't take out too much because it doesn't fall through the fork as easily as the hemp.
I use the miscanthius (sorry think that is how it is spelt) and Aquamax bed together as the miscanthius is not very absorbent but the Aquamax bed is although my local supplier is not in busiess now which is bit of a pain, but the 2 combined together gives a very absorbent and springy bed
We started using miscanthus when the aubiose in our area ran out. Compared to aubiose it is dustier and we have had a few horses start coughing on it. However it is also a good £3 cheaper...it is very absorbant but packs down quite quickly, which means you use more than you would aubiose. We now mix the two together and it works really well.
