So when I got my youngest, I was told he was a Whippet.

I was sensible. I saw him with mum. I made sure he was KC registered. I asked the breeder a tonne of questions!

But I think the paperwork must be doctored! This video proves that this is NOT a Whippet!

I can swap you for a definitely not miss sold aussie (excitable, hairy, "sings", and still does the puppy dance aged over 2 yo) or a second hand malinois cross (will most definitely chase most things - especially cats)


I wouldn't really swap them for anything in the world, but don't tell them that, I need to try and keep some leverage...

Hahahaha what amazing self control!! My Lurcher would have been off like a rocket, deer were his favourites! He was never even close to being allowed off lead, other than in freedom fields, for this reason

I would like my 3/4 whippet to be that steady . I have to keep really alert on my walks and grab him before he sees any wildlife . I didn’t used to bother if it was squirrels as I thought he would never catch one. WRONG!!! He caught one and killed it , did have lots of injuries on his face but it didn’t put him off , so there’s no relaxing walls now

I think the dog selling trade in UK is much stronger than here currently?

Try telling a rescue that you're going to expect the dog to run off lead alongside a horse for miles across the countryside, while negotiating feral ponies and herds of deer.

I will assume you're in Ireland.

I did rehome from Ireland once many years ago (Collon animal sanctuary I think it was called) and it was very easy. They barely asked any questions, no home check etc.

It simply isn't like that in the UK.

Aww, you got a Floydy whippet! Ive seen a deer jump out of hedge nearly into him, and he quickly turned his head the other way, "Deer? Where? What deer? Nope, no deer here, no siree" He is also a clumsy oaf. But he is genuinely the best pet dog Ive ever met. I wish I could clone him and sell the clones. Id make millions. His parents are failed workers. The breeder said they just couldnt be bothered and he bred them to make lovely pets as he had a young family and no time for working dogs anymore.

The other one is his exact opposite!

Because if we dont support good breeders in a generations time all that will be left is the dross. I used to alternate one puppy, one rescue but now I just buy exactly what I want. The most recent I wanted a performance bred ferrari whippet. And thats exactly what I got. I wouldnt have been able to get a rescue like that, it would be pot luck. I wouldnt have been allowed one anyway, my other boy isnt neutered and wont be, I raw feed, titre test and lived on a boat. I also dont want something that has issues that need fixing. And the only whippets you see in rescues over here tend to be the ones owners cant manage because they have behavioural problems most people cant manage.

Whilst my last two dogs were free (one inherited and one in lieu of a stud fee, and her father was 'second hand' and a bit of a bargain, when I do buy a dog, I am not just paying for a dog, I'm paying for everything that went into creating that dog and all the dogs who are behind that dog in front of me and for me and what I want in a dog, it's a price worth paying.

And yet you've bred horses and theres plenty in rescues. Why are dogs different?

Last time I bred a horse was over 8 years ago and I don't plan on it again. The massive difference is dogs can have multiple litters of many pups, horses can have one foal a year?
The amount of dogs being euthanized far outweighs the amount of horses.

If I wanted a greyhound I would get a rescue, though here they are not free. However, I did not want a greyhound, I wanted a specific breed with specific qualities which is why I went to breeders who spent years improving their lines.

I used to feel like you, fully buying into the "adopt, don't shop" thing (pun intended).

As an adult, my first dog was / is a private rehome, the previously mentioned second hand malinois cross. I love him to bits and he's taught me a lot but he came with issues (now mostly sorted / managed). I didn't want to import issues for my second dog, so I thought long and hard about what I wanted and the ethics involved. Rescues from a charity are no longer cheap, we're talking 350 to 500 €, with no guarantees of what you'll get, even if you adopt a puppy. I decided firmly against a puppy from a random unplanned litter as didn't want to provide an out to an irresponsible owner who lets their female wander and cba getting her sterilised. It is also technically illegal in France for a non professional to sell a non-pedigree dog. They can give them away fully chipped and identified but not ask for money in return - funnily enough, this law is rarely respected. There are many random unplanned litters around here, some from tiny bitches less than a year old and still puppies themselves (one was covered by her own father), some from very small bitches and relatively large dogs, none of the dogs are health tested for anything. I decided to buy a puppy from a breeder who health tests her breeders and socialises her puppies. Puppies also have all the vaccinations, health checks and worming need to be healthy dogs. I got to meet the mum, the aunt, the half sister and the whole litter from 4 weeks old. That is how dogs should be brought into this world, and it has a price.

Basically if you compare to horses, no one goes, I don't understand why you bought your next competitive horse, why didn't you adopt? Because, the skinny, worm ridden little coloured cob is not going to take you competing to the level you want. It doesn't mean the poor cob is any less deserving than the well bred warmblood, but it's not up to the job you want. You would probably also not buy a foal from a "breeder" who just chucks the colts out with the fillies and sees what comes out the next year, and the year after and the year after... So some poor foal might be completely inbred. Does not mean you wouldn't get the little coloured cob for a companion. Horses for courses and it's the same for dogs.

But its still hypocritical to breed and buy horses then criticise others for supporting good dog breeders. Why arent all your horses adopted?

People should do what suits them best, but you shouldnt be criticising others for something you yourself do.

@CastlelackSportHorses . As has been suggested on another dog thread… how about you do you and I’ll do me?
I have three rehomes/rescues and three planned, researched and paid for. We need to support quality breeding or we’ll just end up with bull breeds, long dogs and cockerpoos.
Now go and get rid of all your horses and take in some free coloured colts and see how your competing goes.
