When I left Uni I made the decision to buy a polo pony and continue playing polo after being on University teams. I tried a number of ponies before trying Mascarita (Mazzie), a 15.2hh 6 year old bay Argentine mare. It was love!

A few days after she sailed through the vetting we went to the University Nationals at Offchurch Bury polo club. Mazzie was determined to eat....

A few days later it was all change again, from Berkshire to Bristol. She settled in beautifully, but I found that she was very timid. You couldn't get near her ears (a few months later I could stroke them, but she didn't like others touching them), and wouldn't come to the front of the stable... again a few months later it was a different story... she would tell me off for being 'late' in the morning, and also if I took too long getting her food.

In October/November my friend took her horse to a hunter trial, and Mazzie came along for the ride to get her out seeing things. We had a tootle around the warmup ring and she was extremely well behaved, but again determined to eat!

We had some kick ass hacks....

We went to the Beaufort Polo club for some lessons...

In March 2008 we went to the Berkeley Hunt Fun Ride at Frampton on Severn with my friend... Mazzie was extremely well behaved and even did some jumps!!!

She loved being in the field...

My friend's new polo pony came to stay for a bit, and we did ride and lead to start getting him fit.

In May she went out onto summer grazing, but at this point I was having to think about selling her. I could no longer afford to play polo and it wasn't fair on her.

My nephews adored her, and she was angelic with them. My youngest nephew was two at the time and he ran into the stable and hugged her leg. She didn't even blink.

I found her led down for the first time ever and actually woke her up!

On July 13th, 2008, my friend and I decided to go to another fun ride at Berkeley, which would be a last spin as I had a buyer for Mazzie and my new horse (Genie) was coming the next day as well subject to vetting. We loaded as usual and set off. Not long before our exit from the motorway we felt and heard two bangs, and saw the trailer heading across all three lanes of motorway on its own. It hit the central reservation and flipped number of times after miraculously missing any cars, landing on its side. My friend's horse stayed in the trailer and came out with cuts and bruises.

Mazzie suffered a major head trauma on impact and then was thrown over the back ramp as the trailer flipped. She landed on the M5 and her back was broken. When the vets arrive they made the immediate decision to put her to sleep as there was nothing that could be done, and if they'd tried to do anything I would have said no anyway. She was pain free from the second it happened.

Miss you Mazzie.

What a horrible tragic accident.I went cold reading what happened to Mazzie.I am so sorry to hear what happened to her.I hope you are ok.I am thinking of you today.

hugs hun (((())))
i know from experience how nervous polo ponies can be and how set in their ways they can get so well done for managing to calm her!
such a sad end to it but it looks like you had a lovely time together :/

Big big hugs sending your way. That's such a sad story. At least she had the best possible life with you, you clearly loved her dearly and she is such a beautiful mare!

What a tragic, tragic accident

and what a beautiful horse she was. Looks like you had some great times together.

((((hugs))))) for you.

Did you ever find out what happened to detach the trailer?

Thanks everyone.

ChicoMio - no we never found out and to be honest I don't really want to know. It had been double checked when hitched, so was hitched correctly, and we were over half an hour into the journey so it should have come off before then... It was too damaged to find anything out.

Oh my goodness, what an absolutely horrible trauma for everyone involved! That's like something from your worst nightmare, you poor thing. What a fabulous looking mare she was too.

It made me cry reading that

Poor Mazzie, she was so beautifull and lovely. But at least she had a lovely life with you and you have many happy memories of her.
