Quick warning in advance - this is going to be ludicrously long, and full of photos so feel free to click away now ;) All photos were taken by my Dad, or by the fantastic "Spidge Event Photography" who have provided great customer service and given me full permission to post so please don't button press

Day One - Saturday Dressage

The week leading up to SoE didn't go quite to plan with the ever-helpful Murphy slicing his eyelid in the lorry somehow 2 days before. As we couldn't put any anaesthetic in him so close to the event, the vet said we could try twitching him to see if he would allow her to have a good look at it but wasn't too hopeful of how much we could do without doping him. Murphy however was an absolute poppet and allowed her to put 2 staples in, and spray it with Alu-spray  what a good boy

We had a very sociable dressage time of 12.12 on the saturday so I had plenty of time to get the boy sparkling :) Huge thanks to all those of you who provided me with white tail tips - the results speak for themselves in the photos :p I got down to the show ground with plenty of time to walk the xc. I had fully intended to take course photos for Sarah_Jane but I ended up meeting a really lovely lady who was also course walking and we were so engrossed in chatting away that I totally forgot! The course was pretty much as expected - much more technical than a Novice, with one or two beefier fences which made it feel like a step up. The first water came very early at fence 3 with a house on a curving 4/5 strides to a log drop into the water, a step out with 2 short strides to a large-ish skinny log. There were a few more tricky combinations including a corner combination and a spooky hollow. The one combination that left me scratching my head a little was a bank with a bounce log drop with 2/3 strides to a VERY angled house which was numbered separately so you could circle. I decided I would probably go straight as Murphy is so honest, but could see it causing the odd problem.

Dressage time loomed so I donned my top hat and tails and climbed aboard the grey boy. The warm up is split between two large schools with good surfaces so we headed in and I started him off long and low to relax him and get him swinging along nicely

He seemed really focused and relaxed so starting gradually picking him up into more of a test frame whilst trying to maintain the swing and forwardness. Here are some snaps of the warm up:

We headed in which meant a change from lovely springy rubber surface to firm grass and unfortunately I lost some of the cadence from his paces. However, I was absolutely thrilled with him - he tried his heart out and was totally and utterly with me. There was no spooking at flowers or white boards, and he kept a lid on his tension very nicely - what a good boy  No real mistakes through the test, but the walk was typically poor, and our rein back crooked, although very obedient. The quarters crept in slightly in the canter work so I need to keep an eye on that, but all in all I was very very pleased! A safe test but nothing too sparkly - Good boy Murphy :D

Our score was 57.1 (equivalent to 38 in standard BE scoring) which although not great, could have been much worse and there is so much room for improvement. It left us in 34th overnight of the 75 entries so not bad at all for our first crack!! :D

The original plan had been to stable overnight before our jumping phases on the sunday. However poor Jenny Nolan was inundated with stabling requests which outnumbered the stables on site, so some, including me, were offered stabling at Lingfield racecourse 30minutes away. I decided to just head home instead and Jenny was fantastic and refunded my fee - top service :D

Home in time for a chinese and X Factor followed by a very early night :) .....

Day Two

We had a very early start to get ourselves back to the showground in time to SJ at 09:18. With hindsight, we were extremely lucky to run so early and avoid abandonment after the absolute deluge of rain that came once I had put the ramp up and hopped in the cab to drive home - phew

I arrived with time to walk the course and watch a few go. It wasn't enormous and people were making light work of it - not something I expected Murphy and I to achieve as we are self-confessed morons in this phase :o

Aware that Murphy hadn't had his usual gallivant around a dressage arena to warm him up, I got on well ahead of my time and worked him long and low for a good 15 mins before thinking about jumping. The warm up arena at SoE is enormous and absolutely fantastic - probably the best I have ever seen - so there was plenty of room to work the grey boy away from people jumping. Once I started jumping I was very pleasantly surprised. He was taking me to my fences, putting us on a good spot and jumping really carefully.

Murphy's poor show jumping record has always puzzled everyone who know him at home as he is such a careful chap and doesn't like to touch a pole. We are beginning to think that he has poles when he is tense, and his tension quite often creeps in when he is worried. I tend to be quite good at worrying him by repeatedly seeing duff strides, so I kept the warm up jumps small to keep us confident and it seemed to do the trick.

We went in and he was super - he was in front of the leg and the fences seemed to come up to us just right. Sadly we had one pole where we got a bit deep to an upright on a related distance (I should have been a bit quicker to hold), and one time fault where I spent too long trying to correct leads. All in all though it was a vast improvement on previous rounds for us and probably one of the best we have done together so I was over the moon :D

And here is the link to the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhsnKl8G1Vw&feature=plcp

I popped Murphy back on the lorry and went to watch a few go through the bank complex. A couple circled, one ran out, and a few went through clear but making the distance look a little awkward and getting quite close to the house. It gave me enough confidence to stick with plan a and go for it.

We headed down to the warm up which was being stewarded brilliantly, and didn't have long to wait before our turn. Murphy grew about 2 hands and got very lit up. He hadn't actually run XC since July so it was like all his christmas's had come at once :o   The lovely steward notched his noseband up and hole, and tightened his kirb chain for me in anticipation of a rather strong round .... and Murphy didn't disappoint at all, my goodness I had one very keen chap :D

He towed me out of the start box and we had some disagreement about pace over 1 & 2 leading to some slightly messy jumps :o Again at fence 3 before the water he dragged me in a little deep, but was very brave and took on the water well, even taking a stride out up the step!

Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGMQhu7D1SA&feature=relmfu

The next 3 fences were plain and I managed to anchor him a little better, but I was having to set up quite far our in front of the fences as I didn't quite trust the little oik :p

We then had 2 quite big pallisades on 2 strides on an angle which he jumped really well before galloping on down the hill to the elephant trap which he ate for breakfast :D Next was a big table which jumped well, then the roll top to corner which I really anchored him for so I could pop the roll top to make a deliberate turn to the corner. I probably could have trusted him a little more and been a bit more forwards as I held him to the base of the corner but he was as honest as ever and popped through clear. Galloped on up the hill to the hollow which was a rather imposing ditch on a downwards slope in the treeline with a few strides to a narrow bullfinch. He jumped big over the ditch and was really straight on to the bullfinch. We got a lovely stride to the big ditch and pallisade before galloping on down to the bank...!

I spent quite a lot of time setting Murphy up for the bank and he showed what a class XC machine he really is. His ability to shorten and lengthen is fab. He shortened to pop up the step, bounded straight over the log, then before I had even recovered from the large drop he had locked onto the house which was on a very acute angle, lengthened and taken a stride out! What a boy!! :D

Video shows just how much of a mere passenger I am!! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNE4oDYqt_o&feature=plcp

Then onto the skinny house in the water. I rode a very shoddy line but Murphy sorted us out and we galloped on down to the little log, to step down then 2 strides to another log. He was VERY strong down here, and was shaking his head at my attempts to brake! He clearly thinks I am totally useless as he knows there is no need to steady up so far out! As soon as he had sight of the fence, he came back to me and popped through copy book :D

He continued to jump in fine style over the last few and galloped on through the finish wanting to do it all again!! We had clocked up 13.2 time penalties, but the time had not proved easy with only 2 inside. I probably could have trusted him a little more, but my aim was for a confident clear - and we achieved just that :D

We finished in 29th position and needless to say, I am absolutely over the moon! This now rounds off Murphy's season and he is having a bit of a mental break now. I like to keep mine physically fit through the winter, but the pressure is completely taken off them, and we hack and generally do fun stuff :D

This report is really a testament to what a superb school master I am lucky enough to have. Murphy has not had a single XC fault all season and he has brought me so far in such a short space of time, so he thoroughly deserves a winter getting a bit scruffy and generally doing as he pleases. The plan is to come out next season at Novice with the aim of moving up to Intermediate  by the middle of the year.

Thanks for reading... :)

What a lovely, lovely report.

Murphy is just gorgeous; he's exactly my sort of horse and looks like so much fun. Well done both of you.

Now, if your winter project could be to clone him please, that'd be great. If possible though, I'd like one in a darker colour - i can't be doing with all that washing!

Congrats an an awesome CIC* debut - fab report and love the pics!

I love how he looks all powerful and elegant in the dressage pics, then seems to develop this pony-ish look in the sj ones. He's a dude! :)

Really well done and beautiful photos, wish I could train my chief in house photographer to take more photos. The one of you coming out of the dressage is superb. The two of you make a really elegant picture.

You look like a brilliant partnership, what a good first result! And in the XC I just saw a horse and rider in total harmony with each other, not a passenger :D

What a lovely report and I LOVE Murphy - have a huge thing for greys. I love the photo of you giving him a cuddle after the dressage test, its lovely and you both look so 'grown up' in top hat and tails.

Bless him, he is a real dude and if you ever want to send him our way, I am sure Mini TX would love to have fun on him!

Once again...in awe of your achievements and love, love , love the pics. I was planning an attempt to kidnap Murphy but then realised he looks better with you than anyone else so it wouldn't be fair ;). What a completely fabulous season you have had with your grey boys....heres to an Autumn and Winter of chilling and then back again next seaon...Well done!

What a lovely report!! And wonderful photos from your Dad and Spidge. Murphy looks beautiful, with a very white tail!!

Well done!!

Thank you :) I'm so pleased with the photos - great to have such lovely momentos!

Congrats and what a lovely report! The two of you look fab together!

Thank you! We really seem to have clicked this season and really trust each other, can't wait for March now!! :)

Hehehe! If only! I think I would be very rich if I found out how to clone him :D He is great fun, I am so lucky to have found such a brilliant school master :)

Congratulations! Such a lovely report! :) xx

Thanks Gracie :D

He really is such a dude! It's funny you say that as he rides like a pony over a fence too - so easy to ride which makes my life so much easier!

Absolutely fantastic report - and many congratulations on your first international clear round :) :)

Ahh thank you TD :) I'm so glad I took the plunge and went for it, it was such a fantastic experience and already planning our CCI* debut! Hope team TD are all well :)

Thanks Humblepie, they are fab photos aren't they! Was exceptionally grateful to Dad who isn't in the least bit horsey but seems to capture some good snaps! Spidge are brilliant too and offer such a good service :)

What a fabulous report, many congratulations on your first international!:)

Thanks Sabel! Still on cloud 9

Very kind of you alidegg but the credit needs to go to the grey monster :p ;) He would probably do a much better job going round on his own with his eyes closed ;) He does make my job very easy!

Love Murph!

Great report! I'm not sure why your worrying re passenger..?? Video looked absolutely fine to me!

Ahh thanks Squizz! Can't wait for next season with our lovely boys!! xx

Well done - lovely report and photos! I've stood next to some of those XC jumps and they are seriously big!

Thank you TGM! Before I had Murphy I would have had nightmares about some of the fences but he has given me such confidence over the last couple of seasons :D I'm so lucky, he is such a dude

He is woweee :)

Thank youuuuu :)

Great report, lovely horse!

Thanks FM :)

He is a dude! Well done and extra points for the lovely white tail!

Thank you, I am still up on cloud 9! It was my aim for the season so pleased as punch to have achieved it!

Really enjoyed reading that post, congrats on such a fantastic 1* debut. You both look fab and Murphy is just wonderful :)

Gosh, thank you! It was such a fantastic experience so I'm glad you enjoyed hearing about it :)

Hehe thanks TX! He can be a bit of a gremlin in the winter when he doesn't have parties to go to so I may just take you up on that offer ;) How's your lovely mare getting on?

SO pleased for you! What an amazing season you've had with him!!

Clever, clever Murphy and clever, clever you!xx

Thanks Ali - it's been the stuff of dreams this year! Bring on next year :D xx

Well done, will look fwd to Int reports!

Thank you - I am slightly terrified by the prospect of Int SJ... but then I felt that way about Nov SJ this time last year so we shall see!!

Brilliant, he is so smart. Roll on next year and on to Intermediates!

Ahh thank you :D

Lovely report and a STUNNING horse! Congratulations :)

Thanks Tank!! He is a little heartbreaker isn't he :p

:D :D You always say the loveliest things!! thank you thank you thank you!! Bring on next season and let's hope its as good as this one has been :D

Sorry just seen this - what a fantastic report! How lucky were you missing the rain?!

Beautiful beautiful horse (with the squarest halts ever!). Obviously suits him not to have stressage too close to the SJ as he looks so chilled. Very brave - those fences are huge and he just eats them up. Hope he enjoys his break getting his tail VERY muddy :D

We were exceptionally jammy with the weather! It literally started to pour when I had snuggled Murphy up in his pyjamas and bed socks and put the ramp up! I really feel for all the poor people who got soaked only for it to be abandoned half way through the day. It must have been so miserable :(

I think your right about the day before dressage too - he was so much more chilled in his jumping! Hopefully we can engineer that in the future if there is ever the option to do day before dress.

He is such a class xc chap isn't he! Nothing phases him at all which is hilarious as he is the most pathetic, wimpy horse off the xc course that you could ever come across!!!

The tail is already filthy...cheely little mud lark has really enjoyed wallowing like a hippo :D
