Pah!! If one more person asks me "is that a labradoodle?"
Me: "No he;s an irish Water Spaniel"
Them "Oh, is that a sort of poodle then"
Me "No it;s a spaniel" I shall scream. Would it be really wrong of me just to say "Yes" for an easy life?

I appreciate it is an easy mistake to make but noone ever used to ask me if he "was a poodle".

I made a bloke's day once by telling him what a lovely curly coated retriever he had. We were out walking on a busy tourist trail and several people had already commented on his 'labradoodle', he was clearly fed up of it!

I am guilty of not being able to picture IWS in with the spaniel group, I must admit, if you say spaniel I think cocker/springer only. Suppose they and poodles are both traditionally water retrievers, right? :p

I love Irish water spaniels, i was intrigued when I first met them up in county sligo while on a riding hoilday, we stayed in a small B&B and the owners bred them, i have to say my favourite spaniel :)

mind you i have a bedlington, and have been asked if he is a poodle, or a lamb!

I hear you.....I get "oh is that a husky"? No! "oh is that a samoyed" No! "is that a malamute"..................I never give anymore than that, I jsut say... NO! lmao:p to be fair my long coated akita:rolleyes: looks a little more like the breeds I get asked she is than your IWS:D he looks bugger all like a labradoodle:confused::D

My friend with IWS's gets exactly the same, drives her mad! You have my sympathy! Nobody knows what mine are as a rule which is probably infinately better than constantly mistaking them for something else!

I am constantly being told my dog is a labrador. Umm no he is springer x ridgie "Oh no" they say, " Thats a pedigree lab!"
I obviously have no idea what breed he is :D

Yep a Labradoodle looks nothing like a ISW what an insult.

Our Lancashire Heeler gets mistaken for all sorts and when you tell them they think you are joking as they have never heard of them.

I get annoyed when someone asked if Pixel is a cockerpoo! NOO!!!!! hehe! ;)

She's blue so she must be a smurf no ;) :D

Don't know how your boy could be mistaken for a labradoodle! :O Probably the same type of person who asked if our gorgeous, chunky 35kg of black lab was a staffie?!!! :O

It annoys me.when people always think my two are huskies. I'm going to get them tank tops that say "no I am not a Husky, I am an Alaskan Malamute"

Someone on FB thought my pup was a kyoot little kitteh!!!

I am also quite confident he is not an Allasayshun crossed with a collie, despite lots of passers-by asking me if I am definitely sure.

One of Craven's friends is an IWS.

Craven gets mistaken for all sorts, usually a Pointer, but someone asked me once if he was a Great Dane.

ha ha! i feel your pain! i always get asked about my handsome boxer dog... well she's actually an american bulldog bitch.... but thanks anyway!

even the vet thinks she is a boxer... i just smile and nod now, as i cant be bothered trying to explain what she is, and that no she is not a banned breed, american and bull in the same sentence and all of a sudden she's a monster...:rolleyes:

Normally agree with ^this^ as I have the hairy version BUT had one woman ask me once if Stan the Man was something else, convo went like this:

LADY: Ooo is he a Spinettie?
ME: No, he's a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla
LADY: What's the difference between one of those and a Spinettie?
ME: A Spinone!! is bigger, doesn't tend to come in solid colours, is a different shape etc (can't remember lol)

Get more annoyed with people trying to tell me that the HWV is the same breed as the HV - it is not, it is a separate breed that just happens to have HV behind it  Hate to say it it has mostly been a group of Americans on a dog forum I no longer go on as they did my swede in lol :p

Love IWS', mum looked into having one not long back but has decided to get her numbers down before branching out, not working lol she now has 8 wires :p

I was asked if my then 4 month old-ish Patterdale was a labradoodle, I was tempted to say she was a pygmy labradoodle, very rare! When I told the lady she was a Patterdale she said ' those aren't usually black, are they?'

I know exactly what you mean, MyBoyChe! I regularly get asked what sort of cross my dog, Bryn, is......he's not a cross, he's Large Munsterlander! Has been referred to as a "Springer on stilts" on more than one occasion!

Here he is with my daughter's boyfriend, George, on the beach with Lottie, my daughter's Goldie.......

And here he is after a walk on a cold, windy September day on a Devon beach with OH and I......

I KNEW you lot would understand my frustration!! Smurph is feeling much less humiliated now I have told him he is not alone. Some great stories there, you have to laugh, don't you :)

Oh dear! I have two labradoodles and was in the pub with them once when my friend overhead some other punters saying "oh that one is one of those dreadful labradoodles, but the black one is definitely a [insert name of terrier breed here - friend couldn't remember which, annoyingly!] - a really good example too" :D :D

When our Spins are a bit hairy we have had people ask if they are labradoodles!! Overheard someone telling their little girl they were large spaniels once, which I guess is closer.

People often say of Bear: 'Oh, he's a mischling!' meaning 'He's a mongrel!':eek: At this point, OH rushes to covers Bear's ears, for fear of him taking offence!

We then have to explain that his pedigree is better than either OH's or mine:rolleyes:; and that Bear is, in fact, a Border Terrier.

On hearing 'Border', they then say 'Ah yes! A collie!' 'Naaaaawwww! A Terrier! A hunter's dog!' 'Oh! A Border Terrier! Didn't know there is such a breed!' Duh!

In their defence, the BT isn't terribly well known outside hunting circles here, but Bear's Number One Fan always stops when he's passing the house to ask 'How's the nicest dog in H***** today, then?' ;):D Needless to say, he's a member of the local hunting fraternity!

Well just been to the pub with my 2, Poppy my lurcher and Flodden my bedlington. And some young bloke looked at flodden, pointed and said, is that a dog, or a lamb and I could over hear several people at the bar talking about him as they didn;t think he was actually a dog!

I know the feeling - my IWS is constantly mistaken for a poodle or labradoodle - and I live in Ireland !!! You'd think people would know their own country's most endangered breed :)

I was walking him one day and was hugely impressed to find a youngish girl who recognised him for what he is - but then she was equally impressed that I recognised her dog as a Chesapeake Retriever :)
