It looks like he has an abscess - poor Mister Jay is hobbling.

I'm tubbing it, and he is being so good (despite the fact that he really does look a bit silly with his foot in a bucket).

Please can I have some reassurance that he will be okay, and not keel over?
 
If you think it is an abscess or foot related then you should get either your farrier (My choice) or your vet.

If you think it is an abscess then you are doing the right thing.

Is there any heat or swelling of his leg.


You should get someone to see him and he is not going to keel over.
 
How do you know it's an abscess hun if it only came on today and (think I'm understanding your post right) you haven't had the vet or farrier? It could be loads of things from a bruised sole to an abscess to gawd knows what else! I don't think any of the posibilities would cause him to keel over lol but I'd get the vet out in case it's not an abscess x
 
You are absolutely right, BoF, I don't know for certain. Hopefully the yard farrier is out today, and if not, I'll call him, or the vet, out on Mon.

Eversince he retired and went barefoot, MJ has been footsore; he's never grown much wall, and is quite pottery on stoney ground, but is now very lame.

I've dealt with abscesses in other people horses, but it's different with your own. I always told clients that at least with them, there's an end in sight, but poor Mister Jay is a bit of a softy (not me obviously, 'ard as nails, me!).

Going up to the yard to see how he is soon - I'm sure he'll need some carrot medicine!
 
If he's hopping lame I would be getting him checked asap. It could be anything.
My lad came in earlier this year practically non weight bearing in a hind. No heat or swelling. Turned out the smallest stone had punctured his sole - cue very big absess. It needed a lot of farrier attention and it was critical it was drained and cleaned out before infection set in. He healed fairly quickly once this was done.
My point is, if hes that sore, its important you get it looked at soon as. :)
 
He doesn't seem too bad today, certainly no worse and possibly a bit better. He seems happier too.

As with you, Doris, there is no heat or swelling. One of the girls at the yard's OH's is a vet, so as he's about tomorrow, he's said he will have a look at MJ.

I am such a worrier!
