I think my mare may have mites, she is stamping her back feet alot and itching them. trouble is, unless i want a kick in teh head she wont let me get that close (still learning how to let people touch her legs) fronts are ok now, no mud fever evident, I will get the vet out this week who can give her njection that gets rid of mites - anything else i can do, bearing in mind she wont let me do much to her legs?!

I think some of them work on both if not there is a fantastic concentrate you can buy and dilute called dynamite. . can use on all animals. . I use on horses dogs and parrot! As a preventative measure! Does it say in the packet if they work on mites?

Will she let you touch her back legs at all? If so you should be able to get Frontline Spot On on (the spray is difficult for hairy legs as it needs to be sprayed onto the skin). It's the same active ingrediant as the pump spray, just a different formulation.

I use one medium sized dog pippette (20kg) per leg and it works brilliantly for my cob.

Teresa_F does a great PM about Pig Oil and Sulphur which is meant to be v good once the injection has killed them off. As some other's have suggested Frontline is good too.
Until the vet comes try hibiscrub diluted in warm water to soothe and help the scabs. Just make sure it's dried well after - I use a hairdryer on Jasper - he loves it!!
Wondergel is good to soothe, and the tea-tree is a natural insect repellent, the mites don't like it!
Good luck with it, had to clip my boy's legs in the end. Much better now though

We've finally found something that works on our little cob, he's been suffering for months now and frontline, mite jabs, etc havent touched him at all. Got a really good tip from our tack shop lady the other day which is to use basically a lice/mites/mange mites application for rabbits and guinea pigs you can get from pet shops. It's completely different to the others as it contains ivermectine or something like that that, which eliminates mange mites. It works similar to front line in the way you just open the little tube and pop it on the skin [can do it very very quick and gone in one squeeze!] and it then works the same [ie,goes throughout the skin].

We finally got some yesterday and put some on said poorly oblet, and it's worked instantly! No scratching, itching or anything. Just...gone!

We put two tubes on each leg, one behind his knee/or hock and then the other on his fetlock, then are going to repeat this every other week for the minute, but with just one tube from now on. But he did have them quite bad.

I'll try find the name of it, the boxes of the stuff are in our tack room not to hand sorry! But basically just ask fo rabbit and guinea pig de-louse/mites stuff which contains ivermectine...they'll know what you're on about
