Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a treatment for mites and/or lice? I have been recommended Deosect but have never used it and seems rather pricey. My new horse definitely has lice in his mane and his coat is a bit funny around his chest so ?mites too. I've never had a horse with mites or lice so not really sure what to do!

Deosect is good but don't use it if the horse has been scratching. A horse once told me just how much it stings on broken skin!

Full clip, bath with insecticidal shampoo, then louse powder when dry and 2 flea collars round the neck plaited into the mane. If you suspect leg mites then clip the legs and put flea collars round the pasterns.

Sadly coopers is no longer available. He lives out all year so would rather not clip if need be as he needs his coat for warmth.
I haven't actually seen him itching, he has a few bare patches on his shoulders and sides but he's just moved to a new yard so assumed he'd been integrating into the herd, but dentist today said she saw lice in his mane and suggested he may have mites around his chest area as the skin is a bit wierd and coat a bit dull. So something that hits both would be good. I wormed him just last week with eqvalen.
As to why he has caught lice, he came from a stud in the middle of wales with no hard feed or rugs or anything, so likely to be that rather than a low immune system.
