i have never encountered this before, but the TB mare i'm waiting to have vetted has midge bites on one fetlock. vet has seen it, she's been on antibiotics and bute, and now having Frontline sprayed on.
any further treatment i need to know about, for when she's passed the vetting (fingers crossed, everything crossed!) and is at my place, please? do they remain susceptible to it, or is it likely that the mites started on a small cut or lesion? seems strange that it is only on one leg, and obviously not a horse with feathers, which i always thought were more prone to it!

Is it definitely midge bites? It's usually mites that cause the problem on feathered horses - mine had 2 x Dectomax injections which did the trick. Is the fetlock white and if so are you sure it's not mud fever?!

eek, sorry, i meant mites. i put mites twice and midges once. oops. okay, Dectomax, thank you.
no, fetlock's black, it's at the front of a front fetlock. just a tiny patch, but was very swollen and sore. i've already waited about 3 weeks for the vetting to be done, and am trying not to get impatient, as she's a lovely horse and worth waiting for!

As she is not feathered and it is only one patch (strange - because my two hairies' back legs were really affected, they used to stamp their hind feet and rub their legs together), maybe the frontline will do the trick. Poor girl - hope it clears up for you. She sound's worth waiting for. BTW, dectomax is licensed for horses and if you vet does give her the injection it acts as a wormer too.

Start with frontline and then use pig oil and sulphur to prevent and keep skin in great condition - also works for mud fever. I have a very long PM about how to use the stuff and keep those with hairies looking good.

If anyone wants to send me a PM, I send it to you.
