My horse has mites or so I think vet is coming on monday to give me a definate diagnosis. Long and short of it is got her a couple of weeks ago noticed she had what I thought were fly bites on her turns out its something more sinister its spread and shes very itchy. Im currently just bathing her twice a day with hibi scrub rang vet yesterday as soon a I noticed it had broken into something worse.

Have you ever had mites? what treatment did you use to get rid of them? how long before you were back riding?

Thankyou and please dont shout me down for not realising it wasnt fly bites I asked the advice of several experience people and they all thought the same.

Hey their. When i got my boy as a foaly he was absolutely riddled with mites and he was being driven demented by them, rolling and rubbing himself madly against the walls. When you parted his hair you could actually see them moving they where particularly bad up next to his ears. We bathed him in a medicated insecticidal shampoo twice and i used a louse powder everyday for about a week and a half and then they were gone and have been forever. i also got all his grooming kit and rugs washed at a fairly high temp.

The vet will usually comes and gives them an injection. Apparently pig oil and sulphur is good to help keep them at bay aswell

vet will confirm if it's mites, if so they'll probably jab him with an injection of dectomax and possibly another in 10 days time. This will clear it up no problem. You should be able to ride as soon as the lumps aren't where your tack sits. Bit of sudocrem on any raw areas and your horse will be back to normal in no time

jab with dextomax, 2nd injection in 2 weeks. jab again 6 to 8 weeks after 2nd injection should kep the horse free of mites for next 6 to 10 months. and you dont have to worm them within that period.

Really glad to see this post. Might just try the injections. My gypsy cob got them bad in leg and vet said to shave her legs and I just can't as I show her as natural and I think she'd look daft hogged. He did mention injections so worth looking into thanks.

First of all hibiscrub is very strong stuff and it will not help with mites. Secondly hope your vet would give the injection as mine wouldnt. I had to use frontline and shave his legs.

Thirdly pig oil and sulphur. This does not kill mites, what it does do though is put moisutre back into the skin as mites live off dry skin. So once you have got rid of them its good to use pig oil on its own and now and then use the pig oil and sulphur as again sulphur is quite strong to use every week.

Also turn out for as long as possible and change your bedding from straw.

You need to use a cream or lotion with 25% benzyl benzoate in it - the standard treatment for scabies in humans which is a terribly itchy skin condition caused by mites. It also kills lice just in case. You want either Biteback Sweet Relief Ointment or Carr and Day Killitch lotion - both available at good equine shops or on the net.

My pony had mites, picked up from local sheep, she fidgeted a lot, nothing visible, my vet gave me a selenium shampoo which worked! Other using injections were disappointed. shampoo only £20 v injections, costing over £100

Dectomax worked for my feathered cob. I also slather his legs in pig oil and sulphur (ready mixed from eBay :o) and this helps keep them white , also works well on tails but keep off the dock.

Agree with the shampoo, it worked for me, only a slight feather type, with lots of feathers I would clip them off, and shampoo until no scratching. I have seen hairy cobs badly affected and the jab did not work, I would stop using hibiscrub, it is much over hyped, remember the skin has good bacteria and bad, you would not use disinfectant every day on your own skin,
