hi peeps !! im not sure if my mare has mites .. but think its a possibility ... ive had her 4 weeks .. she was on shavings at her old home and come to me and put on straw . shes been biting her back legs and have found dandruffy scaley white bits in her coat ... i thought maybe she was just itchy ( like they do ) but ive started scratching ... so i rung the vets and they told me to give her a COMPLETE clip ... and spray her alover with frontline ... theres no way i can clip her ..... ive asked a few people on the yard and they said louse powder allover her and change bedding to shavings ...and wash all rugs .. which seems like a far better idea ... anymore ideas please ... i dont want the pesky little things to be aggitating her any longer

so i want to know how to diagnose .. how to get rid and how to prevent ... please .

thanks

Louse powder will not do a thing. Its the clip and the Frontline that will shift them Im afraid.

Oh and you will need to get that straw away from her too....can you go on shavings at your yard?

amswered in vets. getting confused coz you have posted in 2 places.

Definately change to shavings, my boy can't be on straw cos he gets them really bad

I clip legs completely, then frontline all over, then vet told me to put hibiscrub on every night to soften scabs etc. Also told me to put mud fever cream over scabby area to act as a barrier and suffocates the mites!

My cob had bad mites, I didn't clip his feathers out but sprayed with Frontline anyway, and then really worked it in with my fingers....wearing rubber gloves...... It took about three days to have an effect, but it appears to have worked. I'm going to spray again in about a month just to make sure.
To be honest I was a bit nervous of using it, it's powerful stuff, proper chemical warfare, but I'm glad I did.

I can't comment on the stable bedding as my boy lives out.
