Hi
I am having a mite/lice problem with Oscar he has them I know, i saw them the other day although cant see them 2nite :-(

But he is so si itchy :-(

I tried deosect on the recommendation of a friend but applied it on sat and still no change he has started itching his head on fence now and today made himself bleed so I am getting desperate. I tried the lice poweder when he had them in january and it didnt seem to work ...... any suggestions appreciated

Also if they have had them are they more prone to them?
Could it be because he has bben under the weather and his immune system seems to be a little low atm?

Thanks

I've found that persistence tends to pay off with lice. I bathed my mare in a insecticide shampoo and then put some powder on her, then in 3-5 days time I powdered her again as well as her rugs. Finally I did manage to get rid of them but it was a very thorough process because she was full of them- (she'd just come off the welsh mountains!)

I use a general livestock louse powder, paying attention to the line of the maine, both sides, along the back, and the top of the tail. Followed by a good shake all over. I repeat this 3 times at 10 day intervals to be absolutely sure and catch unhatched egg stages. Also treat at the end of the summer and the in spring just as a precautionary measure .... same time as we worm. If you use Ivermectin- use with care and not in a enclosed space, it's very strong for you and the horse. Also it can sting... just my experience.

a tip of a gypsy man i know and he uses this for all his gypsy horses with lots and lots of feathers i dont no if it works because i havent tried it my self but wash there feathers with walm water and bicarbonate soda and let them soak swill it of put a cheap conditoner on leave for five mins and rinse well.xx

Is that the Ivermectin wormer or a spray? You can get them in tablet form now.

Coopers great for lice treatment - Follow the instructions and use for the full course, wear gloves as V strong. Sorted out the problem we had here at the yard with a little filly from the market !

There is Ivermectin in both wormer and in a spray form for lice. I had a conversation with my vet about this and she said that worming with Ivermectin would not be enough to kill the "visitors", so use an Ivermectin spray or powder. The spray solutions with Ivermectin are very strong ... powerful chemical, so I found a natural powder, and also used just a general livestock powder from an agricultural merchant - which was much cheaper, anything for the horse market seems to be expensive. I also like the bicarb idea too.

Deosect is the best , 2 treatments and they are gone and you can use the rest as fly spray this time off year. Wormers will not kill lice that's totally wrong.

ivermectin and livestock louse powder! if he is very very hairy then it may be worth clipping them as they tend to have sores that you can't see. i had to deal with a lice infestation at work, i clipped our old mare who was absolutley riddled and she was covered in sores, when clipping though, the lice will automatically travel to somewhere with more hair so make sure you powder the hairy areas enough! deosect wash. make sure you wash your stable down, powder your rugs and your grooming kit or youl just be back to the begining again! they are a bugger to get rid of but keep on top and youl be fine, any problems then get your vet out who will advise you better.

once you have put the spray/powder stuff on him get all your rugs washed and make sure that they put mite and lice powder on as they may be living in your rugs :)

"Switch" which says on the box is used for sweet itch in horses and donkeys is fabulous stuff and kills insantly, its about £30. a bottle and dont get its in your eyes or mouth as its nasty. Shampoo with pesticide type shampoo like dermoline then treat mane, and tail and across the back (not saddle area) leave three days and repeat to get any unhatched eggs. The forelock is a good place to look for lice especially if he is rubbing his head, try also using a nit comb to comb the mane and dock and rinse out in between strokes this should remove the largest of the lice. Goodluck,

Ooooo also disinfect any headcollars, brushes and tack youve previously used on your horses and anything else that comes into contact with him on a regular basis, i know it sounds a bit of overkill but its the only way to break the cycle.

I thought switch was discontinued??
Dermoline shampoo 1l bottle is one treatment for a normal size 500kg horse. Use less and won't work so well.
Powders I find are a waste off time.
Deosect is by far the best for killing them and 2 treatments, 2 weeks apart and should be gone. Very good fly spray as well so added bonus

Thanks for all the advice

I will stick with the deosect then he can be treated again in a week if they dont go i will try some coopers..... Poor little man I think its cause he is a bit low at the minute :)

Thanks again :)
