including her forelock! she does look a B**ger! her grooming kit is disinfected each time its used. she has had one specific wormer (as have all the other horses at the yard) and is due another in a week, we have put frontline on her legs & mane. Is there anything else we can do to rid her of these critters? she is on stable rest to prevent spread through mutual grooming.

Hi and welcome to the forum

My welsh cob suffered with mites and was constantly stamping and scratching

In the end, I got the vet to give him and injection, two, 10 days apart . This was last year and so far we have been mite free

Somebody will give you the name of the injection, sorry I cant remember it but I THINK it was Invectermicin (sp)
Hope that helps

Its Dectomax - cattle ivermectin which is injected. I've had good results with it too, my mare was stamping so hard she would kick her back shoes off. I had her treated twice a year for 2 years, and touch wood, haven't had any problems for the last 2 years withou treatment.

If you PM me I will send you a very long PM about how pig oil and sulphur is excellent at preventing mites/grease in heavy or feathered horses.

None of my hairies have had problems since I started using this and I know other forum members I have sent the PM to have found the old tricks to work.

pig oil & sulphur rocks !

I also use frontline (along with the pig oil & sulphur) and try footstamp by global herbs. it's a shampoo you put it on & wash it of 24hrs later. it seems good (smeels bad enough to keep them away!)

as far as grooming goes, as far as I can find out by the research i've done, all horse will carry the mites, but only some are severly allergic to them, and hae the itchy rubbish & mank skin, so you'll have to contiune preventative measures (please correct me if anyone has rea anything else!!) frontline every 4 weeks & Ivermectin wormer at the beginning of the winter have worked this year fo me
