Can anyone recommend a good treatment for mites that does not invole clipping off my traditional cobs feathers or the adminstration of non-licensed drugs. I also wonder if there are any other possible causes for foot stamping aside from mites and is it necessary for horses with possible mites to be isolated !!!

My cob has been stamping his feet a bit over these past few days too. (Even had vet out as at one stage his lower pasterns were hot too). I'm starting to think that it's related to the wet weather as he seems to do it only when in the muddy / wet parts of the field and not at all in the stable. I asked vet about mites. She said I could treat him for it but didn't think it was. Also asked her whether they were contagious (as wondered where he would have picked it up if it was that) and she said they were. Not sure if this helps.

Dectomax injection from your vet, two jabs ten days / two weeks apart. Whatever treatment is used needs to get into the skin as that is where the mites live, rather than the hair. Mites are not necessarily contagious - so much depends on the type of horse - I keep two non-hairies with my mitey hairy and they are never infected. Mites is the most common reason for foot-stamping in my vet's opinion. You may see other signs eg. chewing fetlocks. I get the jabs done as soon as I notice anything, usually needs three or four lots of two jabs per year, but each horse is different.

Hi

My cob has just had to have his feathers all clipped due to mites and we have had the vet to come and jab him and we are washing weekly with a shampoo.
I have also heard that pig oil is very good to keep applying when they have cleared up.

My cob would stamp in the field and chew his legs, he also found a fab place to rub his legs against.

xx
