I was reading in the commercial vehicle industry press about the growth in popularity of Mitsubishi Fuso Canters over recent years. According to the report, it's the fourth best selling 7.5t lorry (behind DAF, Iveco, Isuzu) in the UK.

I understand that, for various technical reasons, Canter chassis are lighter than most in the segment and they can carry about 500kg more than an equivalent DAF or Iveco, and nearly a tonne more than a Merc or MAN.

Given this significant advantage in payload - a significant issue for horseboxes - I wondered if anyone had started to convert a Canter for horseboxes.

Furthemore, does anyone have any experience of using a Mitsubishi Canter horsebox - good or bad?

It would be interesting to know how good (or bad) they are.

Thanks

Looking at the EquiTrek site, they tend to use the Isuzu lorry for their 7.5tonners.

The PH one was initially built by a large commercial body and trailer manufacturer - Rohill, later bought out by Mr E Stobart.

I understand that it has two ramps and day living, can take 4-5 horses and a payload of 2.5t. That would be very difficult to obtain on other chassis.

I also read that the name Mitsubishi is being dropped in favour of Fuso and that the newer models of Canter use Iveco engines.

I used to have a fleet of Izusu 7.5 ton lorries not horse box though, a terrific lorry always wanted to put one under a horse box. really a good work horse. they don't have air brakes so a lot smoother stopping with horses on board. and none of the air issues either frozen or leaking pipes. They drive like a car /small van small little gear stick ideal for a lady. test drive one you wont be disapointed.

yes that vehicle was built by rohill but was not popular due to the way it was layed out with the twin ramp, also it went in administration and was closed due to the new management that came it and stripped it of all it was worth and what was left went to bluebird vehicles,(i lost my job that day).

Im not that keen They are a little narrow for a 8ft body they dont have the big truck feel for driver comfort or build quality like say a daf, I would say if payload is your number one priority they are ok but thats all.. parts are expensive ,IMHO Better to look at weight savings in the body work and use a daf or MAN chassis the better builders are making daf based 7.5 ton lorrys with full living and a 2.5 ton payload which will suit most peoples needs
