I am potentially going to look at one this weekend.

Its a K reg (old one!). I am not sure of the milage on it, but just wanted to know if there is anything I need to know about them, ie if there are any parts on it that are likely to have worn out, for me to ask if they have been replaced!

Thanks!

I had a K Reg one, as long as its looked after it will be fine you cant kill the engines with a stick.
Tow very well & I loved mine, ask if they have had the pitman arm done, its a FOC recall but will give you an idea if they have looked after it or indeed if they have any idea what they are talking about

I had and M reg LWB. It towed like a dream, was juicy and very expensive to fix but I would go for another. Unfortunately mine wasn't very frequently serviced before I got it and then everything broke at once! So I'd definately check the service history, they are good cars though. Actually mine was a shogun but same difference, just get an insurance quote first as it may have changed but at that time it was quite difficult to get insurance for imports.

ChicoMio your memory is seriously flawed. The Pajero tows probably better than any of the 4x4s. The LWB is the better one, I have a 2.8 LWB & without a doubt it was better than any Discovery, Defender etc. Smooth, powerful, comfortable, everything you'd ever want.
Sometimes it's better to talk from your own experience rather than a rather bad second hand memory.

My Pajero, in immaculate condition, is on sale now as I have a lorry now.

I have a SWB Pajero K Reg that I towe an Ifor Williams 505 with a 14.2 cob in and it's fine. You couldn't really towe two horses with the SWB as its too light I have tried it but wasn't keen on the increase in braking distance needed.

I absolutely love my Pajero and am seriously worried about the day I have to replace it because only really the defender is the same in terms of off road and towing ability but to get the same comfort I would have to get a brand newie and they are mega expensive - at least compared with my Pajero.

Depending on the mileage ask if the belts have been changed as that can be quite expensive and needs doing every 60k miles, I have not had any problems with mine particularly so I don't really know otherwise but advise that I had when buying mine was that you are better off buying one that hasn't towed before as this does but quite a lot of stress on the cars generally and having a tow bar fitted is only about £300. Insurance is tricky, you really have to use an import specialist I'm insured with Highways insurance. They are not very good but did pay out when someone drove into the back of me. Oh and don't park it on the fancy block paving outside your house - they are old cars and do tend to be partial to a few oil leaks!!! One thing you must do is make sure it has been undersealed, if not you need to have it done - again I think it's about £300. In japan they don't underseal cars as they have no problems with rust - here they don't last very long unless you do. I've had my K reg for 3 years and I've never got stuck anywhere and it's never not started in the morning - a few trips to the garage but nothing very expensive - just look after it you'll love it!!!

I've got a 2.8 turbo diesel automatic LWB and it tows brilliantly - it is an L reg so quite old, but tows from Essex to Devon every year with no probs. I sold it for a Disco, then bought it back as the Disco just didn't compare towing! It is thirsty, but I feel so safe towing with it, it is worth it!

MY OH has a Pajero which I use to tow a 510. I think its a 1998. Not sure what reg that is as we dont use letters on our number plates like you do in the UK.

Its tows brilliantly. Last weekend I pulled a 16.1hh and a 14.2 (normally only the 16.1hh) and it did it with ease. Its an automatic which makes towing so much easier.

Im not sure of maintenance costs as I dont pay

but it does drink the juice especially if its a hilly journey.

I've had two Pajeros, and I like them, mine both LWB have towed very well, IW510 with 2 16hh horses in. They can be a bit thirsty, but they are definitely more comfortable than a Land Rover.
Watch out for worn universal joints/ steering rack, especially if the owner has done alot of off roading. Check for play in the steering wheel, that's a good indicator.
Look at the oil, if its really black and thin, then that might suggest a spot of general neglect.
Look out for uneven wear on the tyres- that might suggest tracking/wheel bearing problems.

Take someone who knows about 4x4's with you, and take it for a test drive, or the AA will do an inspection for you ,its about £100.00 and they give you a report on its mechanical and general condition, money well spent, and you wont get saddled with a lemon that way.

Hope this helps .

we had a SWB pajero and loved it. towed both horses 16h & 15.1 cob easily, we went everywhere.

Upgraded to TD5 Landrover = hate it - going back to Pajero next year but LWB.
