Mixing oestress with other calmers

I keep my mare on Top spec daily. It helps to take the edge off of her, which worksish. She has quite a bad first and last season, which lasts for three weeks each time. I don't mind her bolshyness so much, she never really tries to hurt me, just threatens. The thing I really have a problem with is that she gets extra spooky. I bought some Oestress as other people on our yard have used it with sucess. The only thing is, I read the back of the packet and one of the main ingredients is Magnesium chloride. Given that the Top spec that she's on has Magnesium Suplate in it, Am I putting her at any risk mixing the two? Should I take her off the Top spec and keep her on oestress for the duration of the season? Or am I being ignorant and need to contact my vet?

She's a large and long backed horse and loses fitness/balance fairly quickly so I'd ideally like to keep her in work throughout the period.


Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Why not call one or both of the manufacturers and ask them what they would advise?

You run two risks: 1) excess magnesium - and while magnesium toxicity is rare in horses it is a potential risk - especially in a horse whose kidney function is impaired; and 2) wasting your money!

Thanks, I tried these numbers.. Couldn't get through to Naf and Topspec said they'd phone back. In the end I spoke to my vet and she recommended me taking my mare off the Topspec for the duration which is what I suspected. Anyway good news, Gem didn't try and line me up with the right hind today and she was only as jumpy as normal... Result!
