mixing your horses feed!

Am I beeing too picky, but my mother will not mix her mares chaff, ready grass and mix, she insists she likes it layed with the mix on top, I said she's mad and that it should be mixed!
Does anyone else not mix their horses food?
 
Horses dont seem to care.

I mix as what is the point of feeding a chaff to bulk out the mix and stop them bolting it... if your not going to mix it...?

Same as Sil, I mix because I put Superflex in! Plus I like to dampen it down alot.

Can't see it would make much difference either way

Tell her it is not lasagne she is cooking up! Ha ha how funny. I always mix my horses feed but that's probably due to supplements being in it and dampen it down well.
 
Maybe she doesn't dampen her feeds. Not everyone does, although I personally prefer to dampen mine. I thought the point of adding chaff to hard feed was to keep the ration open and help encourage the horse to masticate rather than wolf down its grub? Ah well, each to their own eh!

The only time I didn't was when I first got my foal. She had been weaned etc but didn't seem too keen on her tea for a bit. So we used a really big wide feed bucket and put her different types in 3 separate sections, to watch what she liked and what she didn't.

Sugar beet was top by the way!

No such issues now, she's perfectly greedy, but at least that way she could eat nice bits and leave the rest.
 
I don't mix! I do dampen tho and just sort of shake the bucket! She only had a tiny amount of mix tho just too make the food more interesting!!
Oh and she gets a supplement! She never leaves any thing tho!
 
I mix the feed but then add the exciting stuff like carrots and apples on top as if you mix them in she will tip bucket over to eat them first!!
 
Cheers for the reply's, she waters the grass on the bottom, and then puts a scoop of water over the top, ive always mixed feeds, mum is a bit eccentric at times! Her horse always pushes the bucket over anyway, so she obviously does'nt approve,lol!
