Have just seen the perfect pony advertised, unfortunately the price seems to be a bit ridiculous. Do I ring up, find out more about it and hope, should it be right, negotiate ? Problem is it would have to be one hell of a negotiation.

I have to say I just do not understand horse prices, there seems to be so little logic behind them. I suppose the old addage that something is worth what someone will pay stands.
 
I would say ring and explain that you really like the sound of the pony however your budget is X. If they can't sell the pony
( unlikely if huge price ) and would wish to negotiate a figure closer to your budget would they consider ringing you.

I think you'd be amazed how quickly they'll realise the pony is overpriced when the phone doesn't ring.
 
LHS that is extremely good advice. I just can't see why, going on the information given, this pony has quite such a astronomical price tag!
 
I'd disagree - when people have done this to me in the past I consider them time wasters. Sorry - clearly I'm out of step with everyone else! It's different if you can afford the amount it is or very close to that and the pony is advertised at a price or nearest offer. I've been to see horses when I've been in that position and found that the owner has not been honest about the horse and then offered less based on this new information and how I consider it affects the value but I'd never call out of the blue.
 
Its worth a try, someone on our yard advertised her horse for £2800, she sold him for £900 for a quick sale as she had lost her confidence with this horse. I have just seen a horse sell at York horse sales for £800 that was advertised for £2500. Some people will drop prices considerably, others won't. You won't know if you don't try.
