Ive got to have a moan....Ive been putting up with this for a week now and really must get it off my chest...
My horses have been moved back into their winter field where I am able to stable my old girl and keep a better check on them.
The owner of the field normally leaves me well alone and is fine about what I do etc...just leaves me to it.
On finishing work early one afternoon last week I drove down to the field to muck out the stable only to find on approaching the gate a man up a tree with a chainsaw and the owner directing him at the bottom. My horse was at the top of the field trying to get out of the way of falling branches and the noise of the chainsaw.
On inspection that evening I found many branches and trees which had been chopped through the day just left scattered on the ground, splints, huge logs and many branches which were hard to walk over. Not only had they been scattered but were also acorn branches left all over the place!!

I believed the owner would clear them up the next day and all would be well. So I immediately fenced off my horse and put my pony into the stable ( she runs through electric fence ). They have been sectioned and stabled for over a week now costing me a small fortune in shavings and haylage and with no movement of the branches...I was hoping that some of the grass would also grow with the warm spell but most of the grass has died under the branches.

I rang the owner tonight to have a little moan and mentioned that my horse is worth alot of money and if he does damage himself on the branches it will not go down too well.
His reply is that he is going on holiday on saturday, wont really have time tomorrow, might have time on friday but then will be packing and if I get time I am welcome to move them...!! I am so annoyed. I have had the thoughts of moving for a couple of months to be closer to a friend but after this I am more determined to move..! I have rented this field for 4 years now and never had these problems before. The field itself is on a busy main road and I often have to ride out early morning or late evening to avoid heavy traffic. I have asked in the past to have the field fenced in two as it is quite small ( 4 acres ) and my two eat it bear but the owner did not want this due to a footpath running through it. I also asked if a gate could be install at the other end of the field so I was able to exit the field on a smaller road and avoid the main road but again it was a firm no.

I have just given up my summer grazing for the rest of the year. Had I known he was going to do this I would have kept it another month to get rid of this worry...I am comtemplating speaking to the farmer and moving my two across to the summer field for a month now...!! Im going to worry all night about my boy in that field....

I understand where you are coming from, but would it hurt you to pick them up? Not for his sake, but for your horses sake.

yer I know - I am moaning really and yes I am going to clear them myself..I just feel a little bit of a grudge cause im paying for the field....
It is just tonight im a little worried he might damage himself, he is very clumsy...

But you said it has been like this for over a week, so you can't be that concerned, otherwise you would have already done it. Sorry.

I would just get it cleared myself to save any more worry. If I had to wait for my YO to do things for me, I'd be waiting forever so I just get on and do things myself. I'd rather have peace of mind and if it means doing the work myself, then so be it. As for the access, surely you realised the problem when you took the field on and you can't really expect the farmer to make changes to suit you - I know they wouldn't around here.

yep hear what you are all saying and good points but Ill just let you know what has happened in the past...
Sectioned off the fields in the past but there is only one trough so having to lug gallons of water across the field is fine but can be back breaking in the morning and evenings to two seperate sections of the field.( most of the field is on a huge hill ) Im not allowed to have the electric fence on due to the footpath running through it...( owner doesnt want it ) so my old pony does just run through it. So have to stable the old girl.
She has arthitus which is why I do not really like her stabled for long periods of time, plus it costs me more money to pay out for shavings and haylage ahead of season ( im at uni ).
The owner took down some trees last month which I cleared up the following day due to my worrying.
All fine but my arguement really is, if im paying for a field should he not really be taking care and clearing what mess he has made...? Could be two arguements to this and prob valid points but Ive left the huge amount of branches down to see if he would clear them...as it happens he wont, so im out tomorrow clearing them and burning some weight to come back and tuck into my ben and jerrys...
thanks for the advice everyone ;0)

Is the water trough at the top of the hill? if it is can you attatch a hose to it to run to your next paddock. Could you electric fence a paddock away from the f/path to run your mare in, if you already have a fence up that she goes through, put up another say 3' in, away from the path with the electric on. Idiot walkers would then be unable to reach it.
Just a few thoughts Jules
