I just want to moan about having a naughty lami prone horse!

We moved over to a much smaller summer paddock with his two field mates a week or so ago which was fab as not too much grass compared to his giant winter field. unfortunately one of his field mates has not come out if winter looking that great so needs to be on more grass.

I got a text yesterday morning saying his two field mates were being moved back onto the winter paddock so what did I want to do with D. He only copes for short periods with his field mates gone so I asked for him to be moved too as didn't want him stressing and jumping out. So bang went my relaxing morning as I was worrying about whether he was on too much grass etc so ended up going to the yard earlier than planned and bringing him in and tying him up on the yard (don't currently have a stable) to get him off the grass.

Now here is the problem what do I do now. After I rode I popped him back out but he really is stuffing himself. He will not keep a muzzle on and just ends up caught up and hurting himself whilst trying to remove it. There is another lami prone pony on our yard but she is a mare and he gets too attached to mares and will not want to be without her if he gets bonded with her. I will have a stable from next month so will bring him in at night but not sure what to do until then. Yard owner suggested fencing him off an area within his current field but I know once he is fed up of being on his own he will jump out. :( I am going to try this tonight tho.

He is already being ridden everyday (although just had three days off as his teeth were done on Friday so didn't want to ride with a sore mouth) but I am going to increase the time he is being ridden. His weight is still ok but he does have a bit of a belly now so a little worried.

Why is it never easy. I just wish he would stay put in his own little paddock just a few months a year so I didn't have to worry. :(

Thanks for reading, its a pointless post but just wanted to vent.

hmm trick one. My horse hates muzzles but will happily stay in a fenced off bit within current field.

Maybe try experimenting with where you put the fenced off bit. Try putting him somewhere where he can always see the others, or where there are other things going on.

Also use the longer posts and use 3 or 4 strands of tape.

Apart from that, I'm not too sure!

Could you beg someone who has a stable to borrow it until you get your own on the promise that if they need it you will move your horse straight away

Do both field mates need to be moved onto the good grass? You only mentioned that one needs it, could the other stay with your boy or split his time between the two paddocks? In with yours during the day and in with the other overnight or vice versa? If he doesn't need the good grass, it might even suit him to do that.

My friend who owns his other field mate is fine and when I spoke to her at first she said we could move them back to the other field together if that's what I wanted to do. I called and text her yesterday to ask if we could move them back together and she has not responded. I think she doesn't want to upset the other owner as they are close friends so think they want to stay together really.

If he doesn't stay put tonight in his section then I will have to beg for a stable. The other livery could move anytime between now and the end of the month so stable will be free from then.

I will also have to see if I can get some longer posts!

Thanks everyone.

How will you manage if your friend removes her horse from the field to ride though??

Are there any other fatties or lami prones that could share the bare paddock with your boy?

Have you tried different kinds of muzzle? For me personally this would be the fairest as it seems such a shame to have to keep them stabled for so much of the time in the summer. If he won't stay in a electric fence pen then you haven't got much choice other than to stable.
Is there anyone who's horse is out in the day that you could stable share with for a few weeks until your own one comes free?

He is normally fine for an hour or two when they are ridden but when he has been on his own in the past for more than that he just pops over the fence to see the other horses that are there. It's been a while since i have tried so hopefully he has grown up enough to cope.

There are too other lami prone types on the yard but one is a mare and he will get so attached and freak out if she is ridden so has to stay with geldings. The other is his other field mate but she doesn't seem to be too worried at the moment about her horses weight.

As another owner of a laminitic I totally sympathise.

Would it be possible to make him a small paddock of his own that he could strip graze in the same paddock as the others? That way he'd be able to see his friends. He'd initially have more grass but you could keep him on a poorer patch for longer and maybe move it around as the other two graze the rest off.

Wouldnt increased exercise just make up for the 24/7 turnout, and tie him up for a while before you ride and again after you ride, so maybe 2 hrs tied up, 1 1/2 hrs ridden that 3 1/2 hrs off the grass, give some hay whilst tied up or chaff so he doesnt go back in and scoff. I am trying mine our 24/7 and hoping the exercise will balance the two out. Otherwise mine will come in at night.

just put a taller fence up, its what i have to do at work and at home

Ok I had a think overnight and have decided to keep him on his own (next to the others). Going to set up a track system (if yard owner says I can) at the weekend so his mates will still be there and then pop him on a small bare paddock once they move back over to the summer field!

I just hope he copes :)
