I've lost track of the number of rides we've had to cancel in the past week because of rain. Today's my birthday and I'd wanted to go for a quiet hack with a friend. Really have had enough of this. Bring back the drought I say.:(

Happy birthday :)

If it's not dangerous to do so you could still ride, I often ride in the rain. Waterproof exercise sheet for the horse, waterproof coat and chaps for me and we are good to go. It's actually quite nice once you're out in it :)

Thank you 3Beasties. As an ex runner I'm pretty weather proof but my riding mate is not. I love riding in the rain too and the horse I ride happily clomps through the deepest muck.

Yes, sick of it. Don't mind hacking in the rain unless its heavy but every where is so muddy that you're lucky to get a few strides of canter, & that's only close to hilltops. The idea of jumping or schooling in the field is madness. And really annoyed because I'd promised my 7yr old at the next show she could take my 14.2 in novice wh but she's not been able to get any practice in.

I got myself all togged up this morning in waterproof coat and trousers and by the time I'd got my tack from the tack room I was boiling! So off came my coat and waterproof trousers and I rode out in a t-shirt and jods in the pouring rain! I got back after an hour and although I was soaked through to the skin, I was lovely and warm.

I love riding in the rain (probably prefer it to boiling hot plagued by flies) but tb gets really antsy and doesn't like puddles either, there's just no point in winding him up out on the roads and no good churning up the field :-(

The rain's just too bad :( I wont be riding either. Its not just being mardy or worrying about ruining my lovely tack either, but the tracks are a bit dubious, there have been some collapses in places and bridge has been destroyed etc.
All my shows are being cancelled too SSG, Ive not got many chances left at all this year now :gasp:

Yes the weather here is too bad, roads have raging rivers running down them even in car i was a bit wary so won't be hacking tb out, too risky visibility is terrible here prob 100m max at most. I would ride in field but they too are just too slippy. So horsey currently in stable munching hay had good groom as rugged at mo with all rain. Still will try saddles on later to get rough idea of fit then hopefully weather will improve to ride over weekend!

Ooh p.s. happy birthday!! Maybe it will be nicer this afternoon :-)

Thank you mandwhy ..I ended up doing the ironing !, rain never stops household chores and there's not a lot else to do when housebound. Have a riding lesson layer on so hope it'll be drier by then. Meanwhile I'm going to watch my two favourite tennis players battle it out..um who to cheer for:confused:

We've been using a flooded section of road to trot the horses through . Great fun. Two 54year olds grinning from ear to ear splashing through 20'' deep water.. The one and only upside to the flooding do far.

The rain was meant to miss us today so fly rugs on due to the horrible mass of flies out in force this morning and now it is raining heavily!

I ride regardless of the rain else I'd never get to ride.

But my field is under 2ft of water and I'm dispairing for the winter :(

Same here
. The field next to my friends is now mostly lake. Plus the hay hasn't been cut yet and at this rate I can't see when she'll have a chance to get it done. More cost!

Just come back from a good ride with a friend - boxed up, rode and got home - all in the dry - but, flies were shocking and we had to navigate some lovely sections of water/bog.

Worth it though - although like a few others Dex has lost his oomph and was a bit lazy unless cantering - think I will put him back on Topspec balancer - he is on rubbish ground and having small handful of haylage morning and night - normally would be on hay field by now but still waiting to cut hay !!! he also tripped 2 days ago and ended up on knees again I think the lack of food and the fact we were mooching along with flies everywhere down stony track is to blame.

I agree, we didn't ride the horses out today it was so wet and the fields are more like swimming pools! Not to mention the fact we currently have 4 being kept in with abcesses and when the rain does pause for a moment we're plagued by flies! Grrr...

On a happier note I hope the rain hasn't ruined your birthday too much, enjoy the lesson! :)

The riding doesn't bother me the most....in fact, if I have time to ride, then I will do regardless of the rain.

However, what is becoming annoying is now having to STILL be complimenting haylage each day out to 20 odd colts who are out on nearly 40 acres of grazing, in July! My new Blenheim boots are ruined nearly after 5 weeks of use!

And having 7 of the colts/stallions in the barn needing to be washed out this week, which I still have yet to do. The one sunny day we had, I wasn't around free to do them then.

The list goes on.

Read Hovis's thoughts on the rain in his Friday diary. Don't have a drink anywhere in the vicinity though as it's likely to end up in your keyboard near the end. Cheered me up anyway!

I had my lesson in the rain and apart from being very wet it was really good so smiling happy RI although the poor woman had been standing in the rain for 2 hours. At least I didn't add to her misery. Now got blue skies!! More rain for tomorrow so I'm off to do some hunting in the local shopping centre.

I've been really lucky this week with the rain. Every time I've gone up to do something it's either stopped or just a small bit of drizzle. Today I just got back from my hack and it absolutely belted down! I think like someone else said, sometimes it's worse watching it than it is actually being out in it.
